That’s what I meant, they should only really be for parking now we have DRLs, if it gets darker then lights on, I see no need for putting sidelights on while driving. It’s not like modern alternators don’t have the power to spare
Side lights have nothing to do with alternator capacity - if you read the regulations there is an intent that side lights are used in the hours of darkness (it gives a duration before sun set to a duration after sunrise) but the area is well lit. Remember the 80s when they introduced a dim dipped for town driving as normal dipped beam was considered too bright for other signal lights to be seen but side lights considered not quite bright enough!

Give it another five years and DRLs will be scrapped by some commission because you can't see the front indicators clearly or they will reintroduce trafficators.

I was referring to back in the 60s and 70s where older people would often leave their sidelights on longer than they should when it got darker and said they were doing it to save electricity because they had been brought up on crappy magneto style systems that could barely glow a filament without the engine conking out. No reason we couldn’t all drive with headlights on all the time, if they’re not too bright at night then they can’t be too bright in daylight.

Dim dip in the 80's was to prevent the old duffers from driving with just side/parking lights on. If you think any sort of light is needed to make you more visible other that when you are parked, then it should be dipped headlights.

I've just checked the Highway Code from when I was leaning to drive in the late 80s. Sidelights OK when the street lights were on is fine. If during the day lights were needed then it should have been dipped headlights.

Whilst there may be certain circumstances when legislation says it is OK to drive with just side/parking lights on, surely it's no hardship to turn that switch an extra notch to the right and use dipped headlights? I mean, you've already made the effort to reach for the switch, so one more click won't hurt or cost anything. Auto lights go straight to dipped beam, so why shouldn't drivers with manual only headlights?

I like to put on my sidelights alongside the DRLs in my headlights as they fill the headlight shell with an extra cool white glow while cruising the streets in my mean machine.

Realistically you don't need dipped headlights around town over and above the DRLs as you can rarely see the actual beam above the saturation of the street lighting... just H4 lights then?

I like to have my rears on as there as so many idiots on the roads these days the more visibility the better.

Hence the Q.

Honestly when it rains the amount of grey cars with no lights on.. they are pretty much invisible in my rear view mirror.

Now have the HID and new lamps for the high beams but haven’t had an opportunity to look at fitting them. I had a quick look today and although I have seen others say it was tricky to install them without taking the headlights out I hoped it would be possible with some effort but having looked at it now I think it will be impossible and the bloody bumper is going to have to come off again!!

It doesn't have to be that way, you can do it with them in place. It's still a faff, but if you take the top off the airbox and move the battery out of the way it gives you more room. Also an inspection mirror so that you can see what you're doing will help.

If you’re fitting the HID kit as a whole for the first time it will be much easier to do so with the lights out. Once the ballasts etc are in place, changing a bulb is a faff but it is do-able with the lights in situ. You’ll probably find it will take about the same length of time to take the bumper off and fit the HIDs as doing it in situ just because it’s so bloody awkward.

I have bookmarked your post and was hoping with the excellent photos you provided showing where you located the kit I could do it with limited access but I think you are right. It will be easier and possibly quicker with the bumper off. I might wait until I have another grill change though (should only be a week or 2 the current front end has been on for ages, well a few days at least ;) )

Seen my mates V3’s yesterday, the drl and indicator defo not bright enough
Fitted my V3's a few weeks back and really disappointed with the drl/indicator bar, its not even half as bright as you would expect for a drl. Unless its a dull day you can hardly see them, I thought something was wrong with them until I saw other comments online. I was sold on the incorporated indicator strip with the V3, but with hindsight would of gone for the V2. Did pay extra for the LED H7 bulbs though and they are brill!

OK folks, many of you guys will have the V3’s. What is consensus on the brightness of the DRLs and indicators. I have to say I’m not impressed. I’ve not really driven my van since installing them until this week and think compared to other vehicles on the road they are very poor. It struck me as i was stopped at a set of lights with a big plate glass window directly in front of me. I could see the reflection of the DRLs of the car sat next to me in the window but could not see mine at all (I could see the van). I’m on the point of writing to THQ as I don’t think they do the job they are intended to do.

Same opinion here, installed them around a month ago and they are just not sitting well with me. They only look any good at night, definitely not upto the job in daylight. I've been doing the same, looking at reflections sat behind other cars/vans & can hardly notice them. Wish I'd have gone for the V2's now, hindsight eh!

Has anyone fitted bumper DRLs along with these headlights? I wondered what the colour match for the headlights DRL was like.

Just had a good read through all of the above am now so undecided. I was about to hit the button on a set of V3s from HQ and now don't know if I should go for V2's

I also see that Travelin-Lite also do slightly different version of head lights also.

Any advice on the 2

I am happy with the V3’s but don’t get to look at them much as I’m usually inside while driving.

I think the TL lights are the same as the v2’s
