The switch that a lot of our customers make is from the 275 40 20 tyres on the front to 245 45 20 , these tyres are dimensionally identical except one is narrower and there is no doubt its better for steering feel , There shouldn't be any difference in comfort as the side wall is the same .
Ben has some valid points on tyres and sizes but because his van is low tyre sizes become more critical . The use of 275 40 20 tyres is massive and grossly misunderstood through out the transporter industry , particularly by Discount warehouses ,
Sadly, Load rating and brands all vary and results are all different , Customers experiences are also different so it very hard to stake the ground with an all around ideal set up .
Cjscos if you are comparing a 245 40 20 to the 275 40 20 , it wont be as comfortable because you will loose 12 mm on the side wall and 24 mm in overall diameter !
Lets face it using sports car tyres and wheels on a transporter isnt ideal but its such a big business it wont stop happening and as long as we watch load ratings its fine . Tyres generally wear quicker because the weight of a Transporter is way more than a sports car . .
Using tyres like 255 35 20 to go low low with the stance risks wheels cracking and tyres bulging , however the overall diameter is similar to a standard davenport set up and speedo accuracy isnt affected .
My biggest bug bear however is fitting the same size tyre to the front and rear on staggered wheels ?? this is all to common even with specialist suppliers and it just looks odd !! Once you see the difference between the front and rear , you cant unsee it ha ha
