4300K HIDs arrived this morning. Fitted them in no time (I'm getting to be a dab hand at this job) turned them on...WOW. Even in daylight, just WOW against the garage door. Started the van... flicker, flicker, turn off. Turn off the engine, ignition back on, WOW, there we go...start the engine, yes you've guessed it.

There is something overly fussy about our vans. When they had turned themselves off, there was no power going to the headlight plug, so it's not a fault with the HIDs. Even with bulb monitoring turned off, if it senses something is different, it's not happy.

Update:

Just spoken to the suppliers and they say that 55W kits will not work with our vans. The one I should have bought, and that I will be exchanging it for is H7 Terminator 35w HID XENON CONVERSION KIT CANBUS ERROR FREE

Are they saying that "their" 55w kits won't work with our vans?
I have the Car Rover 55w kit and it works perfectly, no flicker or lamp out warnings.

I have 6000K bulbs and will try 5000K tomorrow to see what improvement. I'm happy enough with the 600oK, but as you say, I think I can get more light out of them.
The bulbs are not from the same manufacturer and are metal based, not plastic, so will report if they are better and compatible with the Car Rover ballasts at the weekend.

Did you get any photos with the 4300K before you removed them??
:)

I guess the particular kit that I bought won't work. They assure me that the 35W Terminator kit will. It has an extra box of gubins, so perhaps that's what makes the difference.

No I didn't get any pictures. I was too pissed off with them to be arsed.

Apparently my Novsight canbus add on boxes have arrived so it'll be interesting to see if they stop the flicker on my H4 Novsight "Godzilla Mutilator" LEDs... everything is crossed as the lamps are great in our other car.

Regarding the flicker is it caused by the lamp out detection signal as it's superimposed on top of the normal light output and not a PWM issue with the H4 being pulsed to dim... could just be VW sour grapes?
Look forward to this!!

Won't be until Friday at the earliest mate as it's freezing, too dark and I'm an old man with backache, OTOH I could have them in on the Sunday afternoon meet if these bits of kit work.

If they don't work you'll have to put up with the £19.99 Lumen Blaster v. 0.5 which even though I do knock them were brighter than the poor sod in the stock H4 T6 we went past on the A34 last Friday going down to Bournemouth... sadly however, nowhere near as bright as the Volvo XC90s we were slip streaming later.

Sounds good, we can have a bulb off on Sunday! :D

Dubber36,
Where did you get the headlight pictures from? Is it from a readily available document/ brochure?

Ayup Mikem, I know you've got the HID kit fitted to your dipped beams, did you manage to get the LED bulbs for your mains, if so where from and are they legal ?

Hi, I got them off Amazon, but haven't had time to fit them yet.

Not sure about legality, but I'm not in the UK, so wouldn't be relavent for you?

Maybe someone on the forum knows?

I'll post results at the weekend.

I've not sent my 55W kit back yet as I've had a plan. I'm going to make a relayed loom that takes a trigger from one of the original headlight plugs, and supplies the HID ballasts with a stable 12V. Just like how you would wire up a pair of spot lights. The van will/should think that the bulbs have blown, so should ordinarily put the dash light on, but as I've turned off monitoring, that shouldn't happen.

I've just made the loom. I have a meeting to go to this morning, might sneak in a cheeky bike ride when I get back, then I'll test out my plan for the lights. I'll report back after dark.

Well that didn't work. It seems that even taking a feed from the vehicles headlight circuit is enough to put it into a strop. I've got one last option, and that's to use resistors to replace the halogen bulbs before taking the trigger feed for the relay.
