Who is happy or unhappy with the standard H4 headlights?

Having driven a T6 van with standard H4 bulbs at night, what is your opinion of the headlights.

  • Adequate, no problem.

  • Unacceptable, but I'll just take the front of the van off and pay to change them myself.

I picked up the Van last October but did not really use it very much in the winter as did not go in for conversion till Feb so not driven it an exceptional amount in the dark although aware the lights are shocking.

I was driving back last Sunday in the dark and was actually flashed to turn my lights on! I'm going into VW as I do believe the lights are dangerous, I'm fairly sure they will do nothing but will make myself heard.

Kind Regards

Nick

As if you were flashed to turn your lights on. I mean they distribute light badly but they give off a decent amount of light lol

Dont like the crafter besides chances are they will Have VW headlights and as for being rust proof show me any mild steel that dont rust and ill eat my hat 30 plus years as a welder has tought me that

I entered the public highway last night, from the farm track I live down, with my headlights accidentally on full beam, and the FIRST vehicle I came accross flashed me as I must have been blinding it.

They are dangerous in my opinion. Driving at night in the highlands of Scotland and not being able to spot a Stagg or road hazard in good time is worrying. I often think I don’t have them on at all! My LED sidelights are brighter

If there’s anything VW (100 miles away) could help with I would be there tomorrow.

I’m a newbie to T6 ownership and run 4 transits as work vans. I got my T6 kombi as a best of both worlds. I have to say the T6 standard lights are . The transit customs are 100 times better and so is the corner function.

I’ve taken the plunge and ordered a set of black DRL lights from transporterhq. Will let you all know whether they’re worth the £450, roll on January!

I'm back in love with my H4's......I know, I know......I've moaned a bucketful about them, but since the dark nights have drawn in, my fuel economy has lept up to 52.5mpg on the multi fraudulent display. That's about 44mpg real world figure!! If any of you lot are up in North Yorkshire and you're caught behind a rolling road block at night.....it's probably me at the front, looking smug, taking full advantage of VW's unique fuel economy feature!

Love my van but driving forwards or backwards the lights are very poor. In my 13 yr old dirty van, Transit Connect, I can drive across deepest darkest Wales pretending to be Colin McRae, in my T6 I would end up having a Group B crash! Started saying things like, “must get home before it’s dark” and “I don’t like driving in the dark”. I can only think they tested them in Belgium and someone in VW in a “white board moment”, said, “how about lights for the left or right side of the road!”. Not sure what the way forward is? So I will carrying on driving with my head torch, doing a complete survey of the area with a torch and committing it to memory before reversing, and keeping one eye shut, saving my night vision, for when I really need it. Will be printing up some bumper stickers with “Driving with The Force, please pass” or “Please pass so I can tailgate” or “ if you see this van outside of daylight hours please call the police (to be escorted home)”. Drive slow!

Silly question probably (well if one doesn't ask); is there anything one can do at a sensible cost to improve the headlights?
For sure VW have not done a good job on this front!

Cheapest option is to upgrade your H4 bulbs (~£20) to something with a better output.

Next cheapest option is to upgrade to the oem H7 light units (~£370) which have an improved light output.

Although the H7 units pop up on eBay every so often, particularly if you search T6 caravelle or shuttle headlights. Got mine for £200 both sides ages back, pretty sure there are some for £100 delivered from the same people. Add in some 130% bulbs and they are much better and more focused

I put H7’s in mine purchased from the forum shop and they are still worth the money at twice the price. In my opinion the H7’s are great and should be standard fit. The H4’s are dangerous. Added spots and sexy H7 high beam bulbs but it’s the driving lights that you use most.

In light of my purchase, can someone give me a definitive list of the best road legal bulbs to get please?

Osram Nightbreaker Laser H7 for the main and dip. Supposedly 150% more than a standard H7 bulb.
You will also need a couple of the following if the lights haven't any bulbs in them
W5w 12v 5w for side lights,
W21W for daytime running lights
the indicators are PW24W's
and if you want you can get night breaker Lasers for the front fogs which are H11
