Warning ! Window fell out on T6 !!!!!!!!

I have just had one window fall out of my 2017 T6 for the same reason. The van spent the first 5 years on the Isle of Wight and is now on the south coast in Dorset, so coastal climates do seem to play a role in this failure, after the early reports from Cornwall. I wasn't aware of any leakage from the window prior to failure. The right hand side window fell out when I closed the sliding door (twin sliding) and, on inspection, the lower rail on the left hand window feels suspiciously 'flexible'. VW's initial response is that this failure is not covered under the bodywork warranty, although they are going to investigate further. I see that some members have had this covered outside of the main warranty. Does anyone have paperwork showing this has been covered under warranty? I got absolutely nowhere with VW as they also said it was not covered under the body warranty or the all in warranty. I ended up replacing mine with a non slider OEM panel.

Update... VW indicated a 30-40% "goodwill contribution" to repair costs, but materials alone are c. £1,700 (both windows) + labour. I don't have a full service history with VW dealerships, so others may get a more generous contribution but a VW repair would still be way more than aftermarket and I'd still be left with the same leaky windows. So I'll get aftermarket replacements. Can anyone recommend a good window fitter in East Dorset? I have used Revampavan previously with good results but they are fully booked for the next few weeks.

Out of interest, does anyone know of a 3rd party supplier for the non-sliding windows that matches the dimensions of the oem windows?

I wouldn't want to fit a 3rd party window that's 5mm taller than the one next to it...

(owner of a 2005 caravelle with intact windows, feeling quite surprised by it....)

I know that the leaky T6 side slider windows have been discussed many times but just wanted to make members aware that this can have serious consequences . My T6 2016 had a leaky passenger side rear slider from new . I took it back to the dealership who stated that the 'drain holes' get blocked and a 'paperclip could clear them' . Anyway I did this but never opened the window again although it still leaked . Fast forward to now and I took a right turn at a roundabout this afternoon and the whole side slider window completely fell out narrowly missing my wife who was fortunately sitting in the middle rear seat [ daughter in front ] Went straight to local VW dealership from where purchased and made them aware . They were just closing so they have arranged for an inspection tomorrow Friday . After a good look myself you can see that the whole bottom slider rail rusts from behind then drops which causes the slider window to fall out . Obviously this is a very severe issue with potentially catastrophic consequences ie. they are VERY HEAVY units and could probably kill an adult if at speed let alone a baby / child being carried in the back which does not bear thinking about . Thought I should let other T6 owners be aware of this as it could be that a few years down the line this happens to you . We will be contacting VW UK promptly to make them aware of this potentially lethal safety issue and will report back .

OMG I didnt know this was a thing. Same thing has happened with my T6. Bought new at end of 2019 the whole side slider window fell in and rail is rusted. My daughter is in a wheelchair and ususlly sits by that window with her mobility dog on the floor by her feet. It could have been really bad if she was sitting there at the time and we were on the motoway. Lucky it fell in when none of us were in it. Still waiting for vw to get back to us teo weeks later! Thanks for sharing this problem. I thought we were the only ones!

Mine fell out on the sliding door yesterday, all rusted. o_O Never had any previous signs of leaking either.

What is the best aftermarket window to replace it with?

All of this is very alarming. Should VW have a vehicle recall in action at this time?

I feel very fortunate for the second time. My T6 Caravelle Exec 2019 4Motion was a cancelled order. I had no idea that the Model was at its end and had difficulty ordering and eventually visited a Dealer to find out why my on line attempts had been thwarted. Anyway I bout this one it only had the 199bhp version and I felt disappointed it had less power than the 204 not much really and although my vehicle had most of what I felt important 2 things down where Down hill Assist and sliding windows ours has fixed windows! What a relief I not only have a good reliable engine but not likely to have a window fall out through poor design leading to rust and unsafe failure!

I am so sorry for those suffering anxiety over this, especially if they have children or grandchildren likely to be at risk! Obviously this affects vehicles around the planet not just here!

Perhaps a warning note could be displayed on the front page drawing attention to potential risk? Many may not be aware!

Purely out of curiosity, has your van ever lived near the coast, there does seem to be a common theme on this thread?

Hi,

I’ve got the same problem with driver side window in my T5.1 SWB Combi.

Did exactly as you described. Fell I. When I shut the sliding door.
I currently have a duck tape and Corri board solution to keep the rain out (actually doing a better job that the sliding window was).

I’m looking into getting replacement window from Transporter HQ.

I have a question.
They have a flush sliding window that was my first choice. But they also have a safari style window.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these options?

Su

I went with a flush fitting window as I thought the recessed style would cause more wind noise. I'm happy with my choice but I have no experience of the recessed style. I also went for plain glass on the near side - no opening window. This gives a lot more glass area.

Hi Su
Try this thread about the Safari windows.
There is probably a thread re their flush sliders, if you try searching?

This link may take you to beginning of the thread?

The idea of a bottom opening window is appealing in bad weather but motorhome style windows are notoriously poor at keeping thieves out.
Given the latch occasionally breaks in normal operation do you think it will be strong enough if forced?
