880 is fine for T32. Front axle weight is 1710kg and rear is 1720 so you need 860 minimum.

275/40/20 will be OK with 50mm lowering, but 265/40 is better for keeping the speedo more accurate, they also look better on the rim than the wider 275. I had 275 on my van when I bought it but now run 265 and prefer the look.

Hi @ChrisR do you have a photo of your wheel and tyre. I too have looked at what the tyres are doing to the speedo and 275/40/20’s cause a 4.56% difference (about 2.5mph faster than speedo reading at 60mph).
A 275/35/20 only causes a 1.46% difference I think.
Wanting to find an optimum both from speedo perspective and aesthetic so would be good to see your tyre/wheel. Also what brand did you opt for?

cheers.

Just a Thought!

(I will start the format for this post, please keep it to this! If you feel the information is incorrect and a wheel is not suitable and are able to prove, please PM the member that has posted it to remove. The reason for this is to keep the thread clean and simple!!.
Questions about a post should be directed to the search bar or members own research)

With all these discussions of suitable load rated, (860kg+) wheels and the constant checks of suitability and questions etc
"What is that wheel on your van?"
"Is that suitable for T32?"
"Will that wheel fit my bus?"
etc etc

I thought it may be worth starting a 'sticky' dedicated to this subject? I understand that sites like
Alloy Wheels (Alloys) - Rimstyle.com - Alloy Wheel and Tyre Specialists for Cars, Vans, and 4x4's
Alloy Wheels, Tyres and Performance Parts from LK Performance - LK Performance
Alloy Wheels - PerformanceAlloys.com® UK & Europe's Alloy Wheel Experts™

offer a service of searching but hoped that this would also help some members confusion.

To LIST known wheels that are either 'stamped' with the correct info or have 100% accurate info of suitability (Not info from a sales advert that claims to be suitable either, as many companies and eBay sellers falsely advertise for T32

NOT a 'Show me yours'(this exists), as members can use the search facility or view members media etc
NOT to answer questions of 'ET' variants etc

Just a simple updated, edited list on page one.
It may aid in costly mistakes and help T32 owners with the dreeded search!

Cut and paste(download) photo's would be a benefit and links would be an added bonus..

275/35 is the VW recommendation for 20s because it is the closest in terms of diameter as you are finding out. The problem you have is that there aren’t any load rated (103) high enough for the T32, unless some have been released in the last couple of months.

265/40 is the best compromise on the T32, you are closer to the diameter required than the 275/40 and they sit on the rim nicer. My speedo reads spot on, verified by 3 different gps apps/devices. It reads differently compared to original spec, but speedos are factory set to over read slightly.

This isn’t the best photo of them, but these are 265 on my 9” front wheel, I don’t have the 8.5” wheels any more. A 275 is a wide tyre for an 8.5” rim. The reason you’ll often see 275/40 is because there are many more options for them because they are RR standard size. You’ll find less options for the 265/40, but it is better suited to your needs.

This is also 265 on a 9j; not the best shot but you can at least see that’s it’s a pretty ideal width match

Thanks @ChrisR, no the photo looks fine and complete understand what you’re saying.

I do want to change the wheels and will be looking for a staggered set but will certainly be looking at a 265/40 tyre.

are yours Nankangs (they look good)? I find the brand can be an important factor in how they look, because of features etc.

Yes, Nankang AS-1, I agree with Oli, they are good value for money. Dry grip very good, wet grip good, but I find them noisy, particularly the rear tyres if on anything other than very good road surfaces.

I’ll be trying some Goodyear Eagle F1s next, but that may be a while as the Nankang are wearing well so far.

I've got the Goodyear eagle F1's, very grippy and surprisingly quiet... Shop around for them, there's a few good deals out there...

@bully85

1680 divide by 2 = 840kg per wheel.

Therefore a 102 tyre will make you legal.
100= 800kg
101= 825kg
102= 850kg.

Clearly a difference between the rating of the axles on a T5.1 and a T6 (T32). Because on the T6 T32 the highest rated axle is 1720kg, which is what brings about the 860kg per wheel and a 103 tyre.

Or in simple terms.... you lucky git!! Loads more options with 102 rated tyres for t32.

My factory T32 kombi is a T6, the axle weights are different. Don’t think “factory” has anything to do with it. VW must have changed the axles/ safe working load between the 5.1 and the 6

Alot of the t5.1 t32 panel vans have the 1720 on the rear but i have found that the t32 kombi on some have the lower one.no idea why
