Doesnt need to be motor caravan to change the number of seats
I’m no expert in these matters but....my thinking was that, regardless of vehicle type, an amendment to the official seat number classification should be notified.

Yes, but you said getting it registered as a camper van would be a reason to change the number of seats.
I said you can change the number of seats without it being registered as a camper van, therefore number of seats is not a reason it needs to be re classified as a camper.

I think getting it registered for seat numbers is a good reason to do it.
I should have been clearer: changing seat numbers is a good reason to notify dvla!

Well application is pointless as mine is not recognisable in traffic as a Motorhome said the DVLA no reason just not a motorhome. No said DVLA.jpg

That is ridiculous `- I personally would make a detailed complaint to the complaints team. ( you do have to raise the complaint with the manager of the team that deals with the matter first and then use the complaints team when they refuse to do anything - which they will). That looks like a motorcaravan ( it will never look like a coachbuilt motorhome which is what they appear to be wanting to see). They are still making it up as they go and not following their own guidelines. Did they actually say " motorhome" and not " motorcaravan"?
I had success using the complaints team at dvla over another matter but it was a six month battle that has now resulted in the correct procedure being applied to people eligible for the disabled tax rate for a vehicle. ( Basically the underlings and manager could not understand the English language - a long and drawn out fight ensued:))

I wonder if they would do it if your application was accompanied by a solicitors letter? :)

Call a meeting as such a missive would be considered porn! Then, collectively engage in the activity most associated with “top shelf” material!

As they are basically a Covid 19 hub at the DVLA (more than 500 members of staff tested positive so far) maybe keeping their record intact is the main priority. Or they can only find the rejected stamp cos' someone has lost the pass stamp.
I'm not one that takes rejection easily when I feel (Know) I'm in the right, so time to show my tenacity yet again.

I guess if they are so short-staffed, it's better for their stats if they quickly reject it, rather than keep it on the system for a responsible manager to return to work.

Hi all I’ve recently come across this post.

FYI to cut a long story short, following a question to DVSA on this issue, I received a clear response from them saying the DVLA definition of a motor caravan is not a legal definition. The legal definition is that contained within the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) regulation 1986 and would include a vehicle adapted as such. So legally a camper van conversion that meets the RV (C&U) Reg 1986 is a motor caravan and therefore would be subject to motor caravan speeds limits (if less than 3.05 tonnes) and tolls etc.

I have raised it with my MP who has agreed to raise the issue with the Secretary of State for Transport.

Fingers Crossed.

It would probably be helpful if as many people as possible raised this issue with their MP and the Transport Secretary.

Perhaps they’ll force the DVLA to use common sense (maybe)

Secretary of State for Transport; Cross Rail, HS2, electrification of railways, electric vehicle charging points, queues of angry truck drivers, smart motorways........
I don’t think anybody really gives a f*** other than the tiny minority who want their van conversion registered as a campervan, that must be low hundreds rather than thousands.

Any harm in trying?

I believe from earlier in this thread they are predefined by VW as campervan. This is one of the definitions of pre-built campers. Or maybe that changed?

As far as I’m aware there is no such DVLA classification as ‘campervan’. They use the classification Motor Caravan.
