I think I’ve just about had enough of my T6.1

I got my T6.1 in November 2019 and it’s driving me mad!

1. The underside of the van (heat shield?) has been coming away since a couple of months after I bought it. Going over speed bumps I hear scraping, people are always telling me somethings hanging off the van etc.

2. The radio doesn’t f-ing work! DAB reception is awful and I’ll spend most of the time in silence with the odd couple of minutes of radio before is disappears again.

3. So the answer is to listen via my phone. But Android auto doesn’t work properly and any audio from the phone won’t play via the van’s speakers. So no Spotify, no Apple Music, no podcasts, no radio.

4. So, for the first time in about 10yrs, I bought an iPhone. That’s when I discovered that, when playing music or making a call, after a couple of minutes, it starts crackling. And after a minute more, the caller is so distorted, I just have to hang up.

5. The van keeps entering some sort of limited power mode. I’ll be driving down the motorway, cruise on and suddenly the cruise will cancel and the orange coil light will be flashing and, unless going downhill, the van will slowly lose speed as the power is limited. On a long journey at the weekend (about 300 miles) it did it four times. Pulling into services and turning the engine off resets it.

6. And then this morning I got in the van, turned the key and the display said something like “accident detection, making emergency call.” No cancel button, taking the key out did nothing and then, from the ether “999 emergency, which service do you require?”. I had to apologise and wait for her to end the call as I still couldn’t work out how to hang up.

This van cost a small fortune - it’s supposed to be a premium brand. The poor technology and various faults have made me lose all confidence in the van and I’m seriously considering selling it and going for some other brand.

What has your dealer said about these warranty issues ?

Nothing.

Are these warranty issues? The coil flashing is intermittent. It’s been in once for that and they said they couldn’t find anything. The radio is a known fault with no fix. The crackling is a known fault with no fix. Android Auto is a fault vw seem to refuse to acknowledge.

What can I do??

The undertray issue needs sorting otherwise it could pull wiring off the underside of the van. This is likely to have been caused by driving through deeper water or puddles at speed. It’s a common issue, and there are threads on the forum about this.

Doesn’t that mean it’s unfit for purpose? Vehicles travel at speed and it rains….

On DAB reception, do you have any aftermarket USB chargers or power adapters in use ?

Peter
None. My understanding is the aerial is in the passenger wing mirror and that’s why reception is so poor?

My dealer just sort of shrugged at me when I raised the issue with him and explained it was also a problem with the T6.

Have you side bars fitted? Usually this means cutting the undertray or part thereof, leaving it more exposed , thus by driving thro puddles at speed, could rip it off or expose it even further, happened to me with my previous van

Possibly, but it’s not an argument I thought I was going to win, so I replaced the damaged undertray myself.

DAB reception in my T6 is fine, and I think the setup is the same on a T6.
How do you power your phones in the van ?

Just don’t let VW read this
This makes interesting reading. I actively aim at puddles - I love doing it at speed and making as big a splash as I can.

I've been doing it for 20 years in various cars and vans and have never knowingly damaged anything. I've always figured vehicles are designed to deal with rain/puddles/speed.
All joking aside, it seems the VW under trays are a bit feeble when it comes to being driven brought big big puddles / fords, so your unfit for purpose concern is valid - it seems the plastics and their fittings just aren’t as secure as other brands.

As for all your other points, yes, I’d be claiming warranty work to get them rectified.

I feel your pain. I have had vans with lots of issues before too.
Mine is a T6, and DAB radio works well. I travel all over the country, and its very good, much better than some of my other vehicles. SO, that should be fixable.

The underbody trays are shite. Mine has been damaged, and had to be replaced completely.
I have found that the main dealers are pretty poor, and I think the Transporter brand is overpriced, defiantly not without its faults.

I know its not what you would want, but maybe a specialist independent could take a look at these issues for you ?

I've got a May 2020 T6.1 and have issues with the Dab signal, the aerial is in the driver's door mirror and is pants. I used to use my apple phone via car play to listen to Spotify or internet radio but the call quality was poor for the other person I was speaking to. Now I've swapped to an Android phone (Pixel Pro) the call quality is brilliant according to people I'm speaking to but I can't get any audio via the phone (Spotify ect) but I believe there is a firmware update the dealer can do to rectify this.

My van had a service about 3 weeks ago. I assume they install any new firmware etc. and my van still has the problems with Android (pixel 3a).

The DAB radio reception might just be a poorly attached cable. A couple of months ago my drivers' side mirror was smashed off by a camper van coming the other way on a narrow road. A local independent dealer fixed it by just ordering the casing and moving all of the innards over. The DAB reception was noticeably better when I got it back compared to how it had been the previous 4 years. Worth a try getting the dealer to check it out

Those last couple of points are safety issues. I would contact VAG directly and start threatening action about serious safety issues
