Lights in last evening, the bulb warning was triggered because I had disconnected the foglights…..

Didn’t drive it in the dark because a) I couldn’t be bothered and b) I still had the wheels off as I had to fit a set of brake pads.
There was still a bit of life left in the old ones, I reckon I could have got away with that for at least another 2,000 miles!

I bought a set of these back in March:



For £56 they came with a set of Febi wear sensors. The red anti-squeal plates mean they are just too thick to fit inside the caliper, so I removed them to install.
After slowing from 30 to 0 twice, they felt really strong. I’ve done some light bedding in with some harder breaking, but feel so far is pretty good.

I wouldn’t normally scrimp on a set of pads as they are all about the same price. The Brembo pads that came off produce a LOT of dust.




I’ve read some stuff recently about Kinetix products and they generally get a good write up. Being ceramic, I hope they do actually produce less dust.

I might see what the lights are like in the dark this evening.

I couldn’t even be bothered to take a pic once I’d finished. So here’s one through the window.

When I took the bumper off to replace the intercooler, I discovered that when it was put back together after being painted, it had a nut and bolt securing the bumper to the fixing inside the wing, rather than the spreader rivet.
The same spreader rivet is used in the middle of the wheel arch liner, which I discovered was missing on the near side. I sacrificed the rivet in the arch liner on the off side to join the wing and the bumper together, so now they need replacing...

I phoned VW who told me that the part number has been superseded and I have to buy a pack of ten for £22, so I feel like I might as well buy these anyway and keep some spares for (inevitably) the next time I need to pull the bumper.

At least the ones that hold the grille onto the slam panel can be had from Vehicle Clips for a fiver for ten.



Otherwise, all of the recent work seems to have been a success. I have no more boost leaks or whistles, the van felt really strong this morning (possibly as it's a bit cooler) and still returning high 30s mpg.
I'm really impressed with the Kinetix brake pads I bought from eBay. They seem to be the seller's (AtoZ Car Parts, Wakefield) own brand and are presumably some private label, ceramic pad sourced from another factory. I've done maybe 200 miles on them and they feel very good indeed - I've not stamped on them to see if there is any real fade after repeated stops, but that's not real-world realistic. They work so much better than the Brembo pads they replaced, which cost nearly twice as much.

Well there’s lovely….



Spreader rivets - some for the top grill under the leading edge of the bonnet (clips into slam panel) and some for the wheel arch liner and arch into bumper fitting.
After I broke/lost at least one the last time I had the bumper off, I thought it wise to buy some spares.
These came from LLL Parts and were about £19 delivered for 8 of each.
You can get a clone of one of them from Vehicle Clips for less than a fiver for a pack of ten, but they don’t sell the other one (can’t remember which).
I rang VW and they wanted £22 for a ten-pack of one type - again can’t remember which.
Already broken one of these new ones fitting it into the grill but I suppose that was the idea….

Van seems to be going really well again.
Economy is good, range on this tank of back and forth to work is aiming for 600 miles, regens are reducing (see a passive one at around 55% tor a few minutes) and these brake pads, for £55, are amazing.

Will put the bed in the back for Busfest in a bit, but it is a job of moments.
