At the rear of the cylinder head above the turbocharger. Use a
small hand mirror if necessary as it is difficult to reach.

In the graphs the status of oil pressure switches (closed/open) is combined to show oil pressure states. Thus value 200 basically indicates oil pressure somewhere 0.3...2.3 bars, and respectively 400 indicates oil pressure above 2.3 bars. Also graphed is control signal of Oil pressure regulating valve (this far only values 0/100% observed).
Each dot in the graph represents a data point in the recording.

The bumps 1 and 2 by just flooring the pedal quickly. The third by gradually (slowly) increasing revs - note no change in green/orange.

VCDS Basic Settings - IDE00494 - Test of changeover of oil pressure valve​

T6 Engine controller has a dedicated test to verify operation of oil pressure regulator. The test runs engine for 10 seconds at 3000 RPM and commands oil pressure to "high" full time of high revs (unlike normally just for a short burst seen in picture 4).

A detailed example how to run and record the test (Basic Settings)

  • Attached a VCDS measurement setup file TEST_OIL_PRESSURE_REGULATOR.u01 - remove the .PDF extension so it will become a VCDS compatible .u01 file.
  • Alternatively can also tick the parameters individually

Analysis of fault codes - to be continued...
Background
  • The fault codes do not identify specifically either low- or high-pressure sensor.
  • Working hypothesis is that implausible signal (P164A) possibly points to regulating valve - the switches have only states open/closed. Thus implausible would possibly mean oil pressure switch status is not responding to commands of oil pressure regulating valve... (see switch (oil pressure) responses to oil pressure regulating valve in the graphs above, especially the full throtte case). TBC...

Oil level sensor:

T6 engine oil level and warning threshold data during a 30 minute run.


Samples taken at 1 minute intervals. Two first and two last samples were recorded engine off.

This engine reports oil level of 100 mm when filled to the "top" (e.g. immediately after oil change).

Well i replaced the sensor and it hasnt made a difference.
 
I'm afraid I have missed something - what sensor and a difference in what? Any fault codes?
Based on the additional posts about about the fault, i replaced the oil pressure switch which appears to have fixed other peoples vans. On mine i still get flashing coil light and stop start error until i reset the van.

Sounds like at least two different/independent issues. Definitely need to get the fault codes.

I did have it, it was one of the malfunction ones. Will dig it out and post it on here.

Tick "Group UDS requests" - by 7 (if available)​
Tick the following:​

IDE00497-MAS00628 Status of oil pressure switches-Oil pressure switch for low pressure​
ENG130437 Oil pump PWM signal duty cycle​
Log - Start​
Start the engine,
(1) let it run on tick over for 30 seconds,​
(2) drive around for 5-10 minutes​
(3) let it run on tick over for 30 seconds​
(4) floor the pedal for 5 seconds, pause for 10 seconds, floor the pedal again for 5 seconds, pause for 10 seconds​
(5) Stop the VCDS logging, Done, etc. Exit VCDS​
(6) turn OFF the engine​

Stationary - then the engine revs just steady 2500 RPM, which should give only a short burst of higher oil pressure (based on the oil pressure switches).
 
@mmi I have been out and done the logs, not sure which pressure switch was replaced tbh as the invoice doesnt state it.

Blue line =engine revs - just to give an idea how the driving is going on.

Green line = command signal - I believe- to oil pressure regulating valve
In principle the command signal (green) regulates oil pressure - which can be seen immediately in status of high pressure oil switch (orange). See picture below.

However, this seems to be true only when engine warming up. On hot engine there seems to be no response during "normal driving" - see picture 3 (my post #1).

Orange line = oil pressure - based on the oil pressure switches - thus only three levels
0= no oil pressure​
200 = low oil pressure switch activated > 0.3 bar​
400 = high oil pressure switch activated > 2.3 bar​

Observations from the data:
Low pressure switch performs 100% as expected - when engine is running it's "closed" (=value 200 in the plot)​
From 0 - 400 seconds: High pressure switch "closed" (value 400 in orange in the plot) every now and then. 100% response to green "command" signal. The same as in picture 2 (my post #1). Assuming to be normal.​
From 400 to 700 seconds high pressure switch is "open" - no high pressure "bursts" at all in spite of command/green line dropping to zero. The same as picture 3 (my post #1). Assuming to be normal.​

Looks the same as picture 1 (my post #1). A couple of seconds of commanded high oil pressure. Assuming to be normal.

I would have expected to see here bursts of "high" oil pressure - when quickly flooring the pedal - as response to "green" signal dropping momentarily to zero.
Please compare with picture 4 (my post #1, now edited to show more data).

Conclusions -​

Low oil pressure switch works 100% as expected.

Mainly based on the plot "Revving engine at standstill" - when hot - either high oil pressure switch doesn't respond correctly OR oil pressure regulating valve doesn't respond correctly to command signal.

Interestingly in last high oil pressure burst at 385 seconds there was quite a delay (between green and orange) - compared with the earlier ones.

I might do another test on this once I've been driving around for a lot longer as it doesnt seem to be an issue once its properly warmed up.

Thanks for the additional details though @mmi I wonder if i replace the high pressure switch and then the valve. Where would i find part numbers to order this?
