Running Radio off Leisure Battery

Afternoon,

Hoping to pick the collective brain about running the standard radio system off the leisure battery, other than spend £600 on an after market unit? A mate has a T5 and simply run a wire from the fuse box to the leisure battery.... not sure if this is a possibility, as I have read elsewhere that it will still switch off after 20 minutes?

Any other suggestions greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Tom

You can run a leisure feed to the stock radio,

But it will still turn off after the timer as all the other connections are via the CAN BUS.

So it wont work.

Not sure if the timeout can be changed, I think its coded in the radio firmware.

@Pauly @Absolut5 may be able to confirm the above.

Cheers @Dellmassive, that was my fear.... so I guess my options are buy a new head unit or a separate bluetooth speaker for the back!

Any suggestions for head unit?

Cheers,

Tom

We just use a small dab radio or a bluetooth speaker in the back..
.
And leave the van radio as-is....

If you wanted to swap out the radio and run it from your leisure battery then @Absolut5 can advise.

You need Media Control. An option like app connect. You can use it to control the head unit. You can de activate standby so it must be a coding thing.

Sweet.... I think I looked at this before...

But couldnot get it to work...

Time to try again....

There must be a VCDS tweek for the timeout? @Robert @mmi ?

.

We run a separate standard head unit in the Leisure area. This drives the rear speakers when in Leisure mode. When in Vehicle mode the rear speakers are run off the 'rear speaker connection' on the Vehicle head unit.

It works very well for us, with the rear head unit being in the right place for Leisure mode use.

Clever solution. Like it... got a few pics on how you done it?

Ah. . . . . . It works now.

Both radio and phone connected to Van's wifi....

Would be interesting to see a) with standby b) without the standby
1) coding
2) adaptation map
3) block map
for the unit 5F
How to ---> create adpmap+blockmap

EDIT: possibly far fetched but the setting could be "hidden" also in BCM (module 09) as (some) energy management functions have their homebase there.

A few photos of our Leisure head unit. It was installed by our converter Sussex Campervans at our request. They suggested the cheaper solution of a portable speaker. But we went for the integrated unit and for us it’s brilliant.

Head unit choice was a bit limited. It had to be a ‘short body’ and we also wanted DAB, although rarely use the latter as we mostly stream internet radio or music via a Bluetooth link to a phone. Rear speakers in normal overhead position are Pioneer 6”x9” fed through a relay so the Vehicle head unit feeds them when ignition is on and the Leisure head unit when ignition is off.

It all works a treat for us and gives us just what we were seeking.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Does the VW app work with the basic VW headunit, or does it require upgrades?

And @t0mb0, how do you access the engineer mode?

Cheers,

Cheers,

I used OBD11, I assume it’s also possible with VCDS.

This sounds hopeful!

Are there people out there that would be able to help me with this kind of thing, or is it a case of going to the guys that did the conversion? Or getting the kit myself?

In Plymouth if that is helpful...

You may be in luck, T6F HQ is in Plymouth

Happy to catch up and see whats what, not done it before but we can have a look a see whats what and hopefully learn something for everyone else ?
