Hello
I would really appreciate some advice as to how people have finished the inside of their window fitment after installing OEM sliding windows into a panel van door.

I am aware that I will have to cut an additional part of the frame to get the sliding window to fit correctly but I wan to know how they are finished.
Do people use the rubber U-trim on the inner skin and then the window is bonded to the outer surface.

Any pictures or ideas would be very helpful please.
I plan to install window curtains from Exploria after they the windows are installed. Has anyone tried the blinds which are now available

Thank you
Regards
Sean

Hi Sean most of the converters cut the windows out then line the van then bond the windows makes a nicer job and less fiddley
My factory kombi hasn't got knock on u trim, you wouldn't need it if you go for vanshades as this covers the area.
I bought u trim and glue to do my rear quarters never used it put it on the for sale section of this forum.
If you do come view the seats could do you a deal with the window fitting kits aswell
If you need any pics of the shades or info drop us a message m8

Hi
Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place. I'm new to all this, but was wondering if anyone had the part numbers for VW OEM Sliding windows or prices - trying to convert my van to a Kombi.
Any replies would be great.

Your better off getting windows from Camper Glass or similar, original windows are known to leak.

Hello all,

I have a set of genuine Kombi sliding windows for my panel van. I’ve had a search on here for fitting information but can’t really find anything, I’m aware that these often leak..

From what I understand, there is no ‘U’ trim used on the inner and outer skins from factory, and there is additional cutting to do?

Yes I guess you are correct, it's normally a simple 'U' shaped trim that the after market window fitters use or at least have on the ones that I have had fitted in the past. The folks that fitted my recent ones were Van Window Specialists at Castleford , their website shows that their on-line shop is still open. They quote the 'U' shaped trim here ACCESSORIES
The trim pushes over the cut edge of the bodywork and may be not possible / easy after the sliding windows are fitted due to the internal overhang of the sliding runners.

If you are only fitting the middle windows there should be a rubber/plastic trim glued to the rear trailing-edge of the glass. I have a pair removed from mine when the rear windows were fitted to my Kombi if you need them, drop me a PM if you do. This is quoted as part number 7E0845525A (Cover trim for side window) which is held in place with adhesive.

Rod

PS -- VW don't fit any trim on the metal edge of the bodywork when the windows are factory fit but their edges are not as rough as when cut 'after market'!

Hi Rod,

Thanks for the reply. Instead of using the U trim I think I’ll spend a bit of time fettling the edges, and then prime and paint it.

I didn’t know about the trim down the side of the window, I’ll see if this is available from TPS if not I’ll send you a message - thanks.

Would it be right to assume that the kombi shell is galvanised after any modifications to the side panels, assuming the side panels aren't unique to the kombi?
Bear this in mind if finishing the metal cuts by hand as it will need decent protection.

In manufacture side panels differ depending on the vehicle specification. i.e. panel vans have different panels to a Kombi and again differ if all windows are fitted, let alone the variations in sliding door possibilities & SWB / LWB etc.

Take the opportunity to go to Hanover and see them made, I'm sure you will be fascinated. You do have to book your visit in advance though more info here Werkbesichtigung | Unternehmen | Volkswagen Deutschland . Obviously the current Coronavirus problems have closed the factories.

This looks excellent @rod_vw, I’ll be factoring this into our next Euro trip.

I've been to Wolfsburg and Hanover, first time to Wolfsburg in August 1973 when the 1303 Beetle was new enough for the public in the street to stop and look at it. then again seeing Golfs manufactured. Also visited with a group of very early Beetles in 1999 for a photo shoot along the factory frontage.

I went around Hanover when the T3 was being made so pre 1990, can't remember exactly the year.

I’m looking to find new drains but massively struggling to find the part numbers for both types of drains or a link to order them from. Can somebody please help

Sorry but those parts do not exist as separate items, come only as part of the complete sliding window assembly.

I guess from your pictures yours were damaged when the windows were removed from the donor vehicle.

Hi Paul,

I purchased the pair of windows used, they do come up on eBay now and then.

I much prefer the look of the genuine VW items as even though you can get aftermarket flush opening windows, the opening is much smaller.

These are a pain to fit mind, I ended up drilling multiple holes outwards using the inner skin as a guide, and then draw a line between them on the outside. Cut the outside skin using an air nibbler so not to damage the inner skin finish. I then cut the rectangular sections for the upper and lower runners.

The other option is to cut it out using the inner skin as a guide as before, but then mark an extra 10/15mm outwards and cut both skins. I didn’t take this option as I wasn’t happy I would get a decent finish on the esges.

Hope this helps people in the future.

Heard someone talking that the window apertures on transporters and caravelle/calis are different. Was wondering if the OEM sliding window will fit a panelvan, or whats the deal? Ordered a T6.1 and wanting to fit OEM sliding window behind the driver, on the side (left hand drive van, with a solid panel on left hand side middle)

Also heard they have renewed the locking mechanism for the sliding window, wonder if they've done any changes for the leaking problem?

I'm sure I've seen panel vans with OEM windows fitted.

As for the leak issue Im beginning to see T6.1 owners complaining of leaks - so the answer seems to be "no".

The cutout ‘template’ on panel vans is tighter, meaning the corners of the second skin (that you cannot cut) will be visible through the glass.
