E441 RHS Multifunction buttons on right in steering wheel connects to > E440 Multifunction buttons on left in steering wheel (via ribbon cable)

E440 LHS buttons are on J453 Multifunction steering wheel control unit.
J453 connects (via LIN bus T5u/3 0.35mm purple/white)via the F350 slip ring to the BCM (J519)
J453 connects (T5u/5 0.35mm grey) via the F350 slip ring to the (J623) Engine control unit
12v power (T5u/2 0.35mm white) via > SC32 Fuse 32 on fuse holder C to (F350 to J453)
0v ground (T5u/1 0.35mm Brown)(Earth connection, in airbag wiring harness )via > F350 > Earth point, onboard supply control unit
Horn plate feed to J453 (T5u/1 0.35mm blue/white)
Horn plate ground (T5u/1 0.35mm Brown)(Earth connection, in airbag wiring harness )

so there should be 6x wires at the yellow connector, 2x for Airbag and 4x for power and data)

no illumination feed from what i can see, so the switch modules must get the illumination PVM via the LIN Bus.

So the CC buttons effectivly talk to the ECU

and

the RHS buttons talk to the BCM via LIN bus for the MFD, phone, radio buttons.

these are readout from INSTRUMENTS.

Very nice, looking forward to seeing the video although it will probably cost me money

Gutted, thats the steering wheel I want but I have the wrong button payout :(

Looking forward to another excellent and informative thread though.

ill be doing this soon, MFSW is still boxed ready for this project.

as for the buttons . . . . . . this one has a "mode button" LHS

but i think my stock MFSW has a cancel button, i think the rest are the same. . . . . . . i suppose we will find out if it works as-is or if we need to do a button swap.

I've done this swap before on a T5.1 with paddles. - that mod needed an extra LIN bus core wired back to the BCM, but that was due to moving from a stork to MFSW CC.

The cancel/mode buttons need coding, I've seen another post from someone on here somewhere. But you can just swap the buttons instead I believe.

I've got one going on this week, the guy will fit and code where needed.

My van has the cruise on the stalk, not the wheel so I think that stops me from using a wheel with this button layout.

I've not managed to find one that looks like (silver, circular airbag and flappy paddle) this with the same buttons as mine. :(

Ok, so I have the same wheel now as @Dellmassive, replacing my standard Highline wheel.

I know it's been covered before on other threads, but the GTi wheel won't just bolt onto a Highline and work out of the box, it will need coding.

We tried this today and no dice, also the Highline buttons won't swap with the GTi buttons, they are different.

What buttons did work and what ones didn't?

None of them I don't think, I was hoping just the cancel/mode button, but neither did the volume or preset buttons either.

The buttons plugged into the module (one on each side) on my old T5.1 Mfsw.

I wonder if it's a module issue....

I'll have to VCDS my current MFSW and see what modules I have...

This what I have now...

I've started adding edits to above post,

showing modules, buttons and schematics (for the stock OEM MFSW).

the CC butons talk to the Engine ECU and the other talk to the BCM via clockspring and LIN bus.

I know the GTi steering wheel wont fit my van as my van has buttons that look like this:

Screen Shot 2019-03-24 at 21.37.15.png

So, if I bought a wheel like this:

Screen Shot 2019-03-24 at 21.36.04.png

Would I be able to swap the black plastic inc buttons and airbag over and it would work, assuming it has the DSG buttons on the back of the wheel these will work? (With coding or without)

I think it would work if you swap the buttons over, looks like you would need to swap over the entire button assembly, the airbag is the same so that's easy enough.

Flappy paddles work straight out of the box, no need for coding which is a surprising bonus.

You should be able to remove the whole assembly like in the picture and put it onto the new wheel, but nothing is ever certain on a VW, god knows why they use so many different sized parts for the same thing.
