Insurance Companies

Have been with Brentacre for a few years with my home converted camper but in common with some others on the forum I was told that Markerstudy were not underwriting my renewal and it was to be moved to another underwriter with a £90 increase in premium.
Back to phoning around. Received quotes from Howdens (A Plan) and they came back with a £10 saving and the same new underwriter and also caravan wise who came back with a saving of £30 using LV as underwriter.
Thinking that I would be knocked back because I had a home build camper (NFU did knock me back) I tried Caravan and Motorhome Club as we have been members for a few years. To my surprise they were happy to quote after I had provided them with a detailed modifications statement. Also didn't need to be a motorcaravan on the V5. The broker CAMC use is Divett and the underwriter is AXA. Took a couple of days to sort but the saving on my renewal was a health £155. Result.
The best part though seems to be the much improved terms offered by CAMC/AXA policy with regard to camping kit, excess and things like windscreen cover.
So qualified recommendation, as ever you only find out how good your insurance is when you have to make a claim.

Howdens was asking for a tracker s5 to be fitted before they would insure anyone , is this the normal for the vans??

I'm with them and they didn't ask for one however mine is a 2017 Kombi so not a camper and also not super high vale. What is your van?

Well yeah it is a new ish camper up near Manchester so that’s probably why they asked for one.
Which s5, did you go for Wayne?

Global Telemetrics. A few issues with it in the past year but on the whole good. A good App, accurate pinpointing nice helpful folk at the other end of the phone.
The next time I have issues with it I will get it swapped out for Chris at @Dav-Tec to put one of his Meta jobs in.

Yeah. They seemed to struggle with the mods and mileage.
3 best for me in order of price were APlan Thatcham's specialist vehicle dept not the 'usual' Thatcham team, Brentacre and Just Kampers. All other insurers quoted here were miles out as struggled with the mods and annual mileage.

I should probably add to my post that although CAMC/Devitt were happy to insure my self build camper with a detailed modifications statement I got the impression that lowered suspension or engine modifications would not have been accepted. I declared the Koni Comfort shocks and had to answer questions regarding ride height and aftermarket wheels which are both standard on my van.

Brand new to this - we're just about to buy a panel van and will be having it converted over the next year or two in dribs and drabs as and when we can afford. Obvs need to sort insurance - any advice on how to go about this please as there will definitely be some modifications over the course of the year. Probably pop top and windows as a starting point. Do I go with one of the more specialist companies and talk to them at this stage about what we intend to do?

Definitely go for a policy that's specifically designed for an ongoing conversion, otherwise you'll be killed with admin charges every time you make a mod (or you'll "save up" your mods and risk not being covered if the worst happens before you've informed the insurer). Unfortunately, I can't advise which insurers offer such policies, only that they exist.

The companies listed on post number 1 of this thread for modified vans should all have products to suit.
I used Brentacre who were good to deal with and understand in progress modifications for Campervans. You tell them what state the van is in now and there is no charge to add mods as you go, so you can get the roof fitted or whatever and advise them as you go. Except significant value increases and BHP increases.

I’ve been ringing around as my conversion is due to be completed next week, dearest was £2500 through Carole Nash, cheapest so far is Caravanguard who quoted £553 - downside being it’s market value not agreed. The next lowest quote is Howdens at £850, I’m waiting for them to confirm if that’s agreed or market value.

Strangest quote was from Admiral who I have a multicar policy with, which has 6 months to run. They quoted £267 for the 6 months if added to the multicar policy (which included a £3.80 multicar discount) - but said the 12 months price would be £1059 ‍

These insurance companies clearly just pluck figures out of the air and make it up as they go along, it’s a license to print money, at least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask.

You could always take out the Caravanguard policy and a stand-alone Agreed Value policy (sometimes call Agreed Value Gap Insurance)..
