Shop Around for your insurance!

I made the mistake of taking out a policy with Adrian Flux in the belief that I would get the very best deal from them because they “specialise” in camper van insurance. The policy was due to start effective from 1st Oct 2020 when the conversion will be complete.

I foolishly didn’t even check my existing insurance company (Admiral) with whom the un-converted van is already insured! However, I decided I should really check and, to my surprise, found them to be £216 cheaper. It’s also a lot less hassle as I have a multi-car policy for the family.

When I called to cancel the AF policy, miraculously they were able to offer a more competitive quote but still not as cheap as with my current insurer.

So my advise: Shop around and find what’s best for you!!

It does appear that no one insurance company will be the cheapest for everyone..
I used recommendations on here to start my search and some of the ones others found cheaper were way too high for me.
I have just relinquished a company car so some quote with NCB, some dont. No-one was interested in maximum NCB on my bikes either.

Often they will ask the best quote you've had when you tell them your'e shopping around.. do NOT tell them.. or mistakenly knock a hundred quid off, because they all try to JUST undercut your best quote it seems to me.

I have been looking for a multi vehicle insurance policy. But couldn't find one for my car and campervan. Does your admiral policy cover this combo?

I totally agree with you , and have learned to shop around , also got a renewal for my car from elephant and it had went up ,so I got a few quotes and at the time AF was the cheepest so accepted the policy, phoned up elephant to stop the renewal and the rep on the phone actually said after checking my policy he could beat AF lol. Part of me was annoyed and it was around £6 difference so a said to the rep that I would have to decline and mibi next time send me out that price in my renewal if I join yous again , definitely learned my lesson and not to take a renewal as there final price also

It really annoys me how insurance companies try and take advantage of their existing customers and hope you won’t notice a hike in premium and will stay with them. I search every time for every type of insurance and it’s amazing how a search through the various comparison sites will often result in my existing provider being the cheapest - but not at the premium they quoted me to begin with!

Well, well, well...

Yea I,m with just kampers untill the 20th of this month. I had a renewal quote and it's gone up by a good £100. So I got a great deal with brentacre and I can also add mods too. It was cheaper by a good margin. The cheapest price I got was £277.68 with direct line which was a decent price but No mods .I believe that N.F.U. are good but you have to have a Rural postcode . Just kampsrs also we're not really bothered about matching any other quotes . Never mind sorted now.

So for the last 2 years I have been with the Camping and Caravan Club, Club Care insurance at £322pa for the California.
This year the renewal jumped to £526. I called them and they said that ERS who was the underwriter have withdrawn from this sector and the new price was the cheapest from the market.

I went onto LV who we have Mrs Loz's Mini Cooper with, and they quoted me online at £165 including listed modifications, so gone with that.

I’m with LV, I think I paid about £170.

That's great price. I am new to T6, conversion ready in 2 weeks or so, so I am trying to get some idea of insurance costs. Company doing conversion (Rolling Homes from Shrewsbury), it's brand new van still unregistered, and I am finding it difficult to obtain an accurate price. Putting the private plate on it, retention document sent to the company, so they are doing registration via VW partner.

Did you agree value with the LV? A-plan gave me approx cost of £350 to include a business use of the campervan as well, and they said that KGM the underwriters might be able to agree the value 50k.

I didn’t agree an actual value with LV, but I did emphasise to them that it wasn’t just a plain panel van and they assured me that in the event of a total loss it wouldn’t be classed as such.
I have kept the receipt from when I bought the van and also saved a copy of the advert which clearly states the specification of the van. Hopefully I won’t need it, but I have it to use as evidence should I need it.

Ali-G thank you very much for your prompt reply much appreciated. It's all new to me, but learning fast on this forum. Such complications with insurances, it's big investment so to make sure it's covered. Just spoke to Comfort Insurance, they quoted £290, full comprehensive, business use, 5000 miles pa, wife as a second driver. They offer full cost replacement in the event of a total loss, it's not as "Agreed value" but as a GAP insurance. I never had a chance to drive such expensive vehicle. I thought that our Golf estate bought 12 years ago for 11k was proper expensive, haha.

What do you think or other members? Soooo new to all this, and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I spent a king's ransom on our van and conversion and wanted an agreed value policy at £80k. This scared most companies off - a guy at Brentacre said they'd only provide cover up to the cost of a California as 'you could buy one of those for less...'! I pointed out that if I'd wanted a California I'd have bloody bought one! Adrian Flux were good - happy to provide an agreed value policy and no problem with all the modifications - wheels/suspension etc. However, needless to say that with an agreed value like that, my premium is a tad higher than @Loz even with max no-claims.... Hmmmm...should have bought a California!!:slow rofl:

I’m with A-Plan, heavily modded, I’ve spent circa £70k with all the mods declared. About £700 a year, agreed value of £60k.

Just spoke to AF, many underwriters unwilling to insure as no tracker installation due to the vehicle cost £53k which is invoice price. Lady said if we reduce the cost tob£49,995 it would bring the cost to £332 (Ageas, not best reviews on Trust pilot) full comp. Business use, etc. And if we want agreed value for that amount I would be obliged to send 7 photos to valuation team + £15 charge for valuation.

However Comfort Insurance (Aviva) is £295, but there is no agreed value provision, however they state the following on paperwork which I received:

Motorhome insurance - What is insured:

New motorhome replacement - if you've owned your motorhome from new, and it's written off or stolen and not recovered within 36 months of purchase, we'll replace it with a new motorhome of the same make, model and specifications.

I am bit confused, (sorry all), so if someone could please just clarify the purpose and benefits of "agreed value" taking into account the provisions from Comfort Aviva insurance. In plain English language, I am soooo new to this. Many thanks in advance.

After looking at this thread, I also contacted A-Plan & LV. A-Plan quote was £1k cheaper than LV and the policy covers all existing mods and any future mods to my van at no additional cost. Thanks for the info guys

Just renewed my T6 Kombi insurance. Good quotes from LV & A Plan (£94 cheaper than my previous insurer). Went with A Plan because they understood the mods and as @Taylorm says they cover most future mods. Second van we have with A Plan, the other is a 35 year old T25 which again they understood what was involved.

I got a very good deal with Directline. I went onto their website, rather than a comparison website.

I did run into a small error at the end of the completion process. I then called and they sorted it out straight away.

I was £250 all in and also my girlfriend as named driver.

Worth a try for sure!
