Hi

I have the opportunity to buy a second hand discover media unit. We have just purchased a 18 plate Caravelle which has a great spec but only the small screen and I am really keen to have apple play

2 questions

1. If it buy the secondhand unit will it work if I fit it? Read that they are coded to the VIN of the original vehicle? Can this be changed?

2. is it the case that I have to send the vehicle and the head unit to the dealer to get them to update the software? Did find some Information on other threads about this but I’m a bit confused!

Any help appreciated!

VW component protection Is a nightmare and expensive to sort. That’s why the 2nd hand unita go for peanuts!

Most VW retrofit specialists can unlock the units for £100 or less. Find a local company or individual who can confirm thy they are able to do so, and then buy the unit. Not sure where you are based but North East VAG adaptions do it.

Hi ... Give @Absolut5 a shout... Even if you get the second hand unit it might still cost extra to add CarPlay....for that reason I went with a Kenwood unit :)

Im about to throw my brand new one in the bin... wasn't even a very good doorstop..

As above, I deal with that guy (and have done a couple on his behalf with his supplied software etc)
And only down the road from you in sunny Plymouth

Hi
I’ve bought a multimedia head unit off eBay (new) it has been removed from the company minibus the seller has provided the vin number from the vehicle removed from and a full receipt
I now need it decoding and some of the options opening up (I have the sat Nav card supplied with the head unit )
What is the best way to go with this to get it up and running
Any advice please
Like I say I have the receipt and vehicle details it was removed from
Thanks
Pitt

I think it needs setting to virgin/transport mode before being removed from the doner van.

Then added to new van and changed from virgin/transport to installed mode and programmed to can.

Main dealer job, with the van being plugged into the computer and connected to the VWCV mothership/factory servers. . . . Not cheap, if at all possible?

I don’t think this is doable I remember a lad at work getting a second hand unit for his golf and could not do it popped it round to someone we both know at the vw dealer round the corner and they could not do either, there maybe people that can hack them but I think you may have just been stitched up a bit

I think you will need that hack that was mentioned on here, where they can enable all the features and remove the component protection.
I seem to recall you download the hack to an SD card, and then the guy uses a remote session to take control of your PC and do it for you.

Hi have been in touch with a company who can remove component protection for £80
With everything still working so will let you know how it goes
If it doesn’t work I can return it for £ back so not too bad

Update
All decoded and working with no issues had to buy sat Nav Ariel and another usb cable for Apple play
My guy had protection wiped and opened up various goodies
So it can be done and to be honest quite easy

Just read this thread and unlike most I want to reinstall back to the original standard T6 Radio/CD/Aux/Bluetooth media player which I guess looks like this?
I have been told that buying a 2nd hand one is no good as they ARE coded to the vehicle and NOT transferrable? It will be going in to a T6 2019 van.

A QUICK UPDATE. VW LINCOLN CHARGE £80 TO CODE THE RADIO TO YOUR VEHICLE. ANITA ON SERVICE WAS REALLY HELPFUL.

I am only looking for a standard Radio so looking for a 1k8035150L

Not sure about those small screen units ?

Discover media headunits (the larger screen sat nav version) have a software solution now that unlocks/activates the unit via SD card

Composition media headunits (the larger screen non sat nav version) have a hardware solution that requires the unit to be dismantled and unlocked/activated
