Carista - Transmission mileage much higher than engine mileage - what's going on?

Hi all,

I picked up my 2019 T6 204 DSG last week and ordered a Carista OBD which arrived yesterday.

Out of interest, I've been going through all the menus and looking at the information and noticed a huge discrepancy between the values for Instruments/engine mileage (both exactly where I expect for the van based on the odometer) and the two different values given for "Transmission mileage"

I've attached a screenshot to explain better.

Screenshot_20231029_141842_Carista.jpg

Can anyone explain what is going on here? Have I bought a van that has had the mileage tampered with, or is there a logical explanation?!

Any help/advice would be very welcome, thanks!

Easy to change clocks, far less easy to change DSG mileage so either it's had replacement mechatronic from a higher mileage vehicle or it's been wound back.

I was thinking the same, though at 2019, its barely out of warranty so cant imagine why a 2nd hand mechatronics would be fitted (optimistically, it could be a service exchange/refurbished unit, fitted in the past few months since coming out of warranty).

I'd be looking for other tell tales signs of the vehicles milage, peddle rubber/steering wheel/gear stick wear etc.

Out of interest, where was the van bought?

I bought it from a VW Commercial Vehicles dealership under the approved used Volkswagen programme.

Before I bought it, the steering wheel had a lot of wear (was taped up around the top) - the sale exec told me about this and they had it refurbished.

The mileage seems consistent through the services and MOTs, etc:
Registration - Jan 2019
Service Feb 2021 - 17502 miles
MOT Feb 2022 - 23167 miles
MOT Jan 2023 - 30223 miles
Service Aug 2023 - 33184
MOT Oct 2023 - 33199 miles (directly prior to my purchase)

I've got the full service history and there is nothing in there about replacing a mechatronic unit in there.

Does this mean it is likely that the mileage has been altered?!

What should I be checking/doing next?!

(sorry if there is something I'm missing here, but I'm not an expert/vehicle savvy by any manner of means!)

33k with a taped up steering wheel does sound odd....if any 'Tom-foolery' had been done, id expect it was from first registration to first service with that being a 2year gap and the other intervals seeming pretty consistent. i dont suppose there was an owner change in 2021 was there?

Could be an issue with how Carista reads the data, maybe others with the same engine/transmission could check their readings

I think is much easier to block mileage than most think.. I've seen a few dodgy post on Facebook...

Nope, only the one previous owner, known to the dealership and always serviced with them.

On flexible service plan, so had those two services to date.

Seems to average 7k-8k each year since registration. I did a vcheck report and got a copy of the dealerships HPI report and both said it had passed their mileage checks.

This is what I'm hoping - is anyone else able to check?

Any idea why Carista would show two entries (slightly different) for "Transmission mileage", rather than just one?

Looking at available measuring values of DSG DQ-500 used in T6, there’s two different mileages reported - Carista probably reports the both with same name. With VCDS names are as found from this post:

IDE02820Transmission mileage59903.1
IDE03171-ENG102987Driving strategy transmission
mileage
-Q002 Total Driving Time
63984.9

That post also seems to have about 4k difference. I don’t know what the difference means - one guess is that factory testing does about 4k after which the box is reset for delivery. But reset only zeroes the main mileage.

Sample size one though. Should look at few more samples to be sure the difference is always in the 4k neighborhood.

I wouldn’t be too worried, the engine and cluster are the two main values that are useful here, the small discrepancy between them is also normal as dealers will zero the cluster mileage at PDI (clusters can be cleared as long as value is below 50) and the km values shown match the miles value displayed so I would say it’s all good ?

Any idea why the transmission mileage is showing almost twice as high as the engine and cluster though?

That seems a huge (and concerning) difference.

Thanks for this - although this post/report doesn't show the engine or Instruments mileage, the poster of the report states that the mileage of this van is around 37000, which seems to match the mileage of the transmission mileage on that van.

That is probably making me more concerned to be honest, as the data showing for my van on Carista has my engine mileage/odometer showing 33597 miles (54070km), but the data for the transmission mileage is showing almost double that 98140km (approx 61000 miles).

How would I be able to check if the mechatronic had been swapped in from another vehicle or if the odometer has been wound back? Would it be worth taking it to my local VW van centre and asking for their advice and for them to check? (I originally bought the van from a dealership around 300 miles away from me).

there are people out there that clock the mileage off the speedo just before every mot
but i dont know if that does or doesnt do the gearbox
taped up steering wheel is iffy

Quite a few of more samples below - there indeed seems to be an offset from day 1.
The IDE02820 follows very closely the engine/dash numbers (less than 0.3% deviation).

VCDS diagnostics tool would tell a lot about internals of DSG, including build date - anyways, hopefully someone can confirm Carista's accuracy.
Meanwhile, please post "Detailed ECU info"-report (under Carista Service menu). Let's check what it tells.

Thanks to everyone for all the comments and info so far.

Nice lineage.

Got by the computer and can confirm my tranny also shows the difference although just 3300km as opposed to > 4k km. So, now we know at least 4 vehicles show the difference, it's range seems to be 3-5k km and the difference stays constant (or rather I don't know what would reset "driving strategy"). As @mmi data shows, the difference is there from the factory so nothing to worry about, probably just factory testing or initial training of the mechatronic.

Code:
IDE02820,Transmission mileage,76907.0, km
IDE03171-ENG102987,Driving strategy transmission mileage-Q002 Total Driving Time,80200.8, km

I get that there seems to be this consistent difference of around 4k between the two transmission mileage values, but it is the 44,067km difference between the engine mileage/odometer reading, and the reading for the transmission mileage on my van?

Surely that is a big concern/worry when my van is only supposed to have done ~32k miles, but the transmission milage is showing ~60k miles?!

I would ask for the dealers official response to this discrepancy in writing. I would love to know if main dealers take a full scan during routine services, I very much doubt it but would be a good way to verify mileage. As previously mentioned clock mileage is easy to change via OBD, DSG mileage needs to be done connected to gearbox so those who do large mileage and wind back before MOT/service I doubt go to the trouble.
