Camping Ideas and Tips

After battling with this beast . . . Air Gazebo ( GO Outdoor WOW deal last week)

The issue was that it had 3x air inflation points and next to impossible to get blown up on your own without getting . . . . tangled up, getting your knickers in a twist, spitting your dummy out the pram, having a hissy fit. . . . . . . . etc etc.

so to save having a full blown melt down & Diva moment.

it got returned and upgraded to this. . . .

This one has a single inflation point, so you just pump it up and it pops into life - peg down.

job done.

here it is ready to be tested at Campersite 2021.

and for those that know me - of course i dont use the manual air pump. . . thats way to much effort.

we use one of these =]

well infact we have three . . . .

the 12v dc one: (high pressure - low volume) (we use this for the airbeam tent for 5-8psi)

the small 240vac one . . ( high volume - low pressure ) ( we use this for fast filling of tent, air beams, blow-up beds and camp furniture etc)

FYI i plug these into the Battery packs i run (Solar Generator units) -

@Dellmassive. Back in the dark ages of the last century, I did a 6 year posting in Cyprus and most restaurants had ‘electric b’stard killers’ hanging up. I don’t know whether it’s the same tech nowadays but those ones made a really satisfying electric crackling noise when they killed a mossie, moth or similar which was always very satisfying in a sicko kind of way.

yes the the same tech - sort of.

They generate a very high voltage like 4KV on a metal grid . . when the flying "whatsits" come into contact with the grid they get zapped (electrocuted)

the main difference now days is they using lower power UV LED lights so they can run from battery's.

some of the newer ones also have a "Mozzi bait" to attract them. (as Mozzi are normally attracted by carbon dioxide in mammal breath)

The Commercial grade units are still 240vac and use Blue/UV florescent tubes, but use the same high voltage grid technique . .

In the cookhouse . There was about 5 of them all crackling away.

Geared up and ready to go . . . . . almost.

Thanks @VanDamMan for the Top-Tip on using storage boxes. =]

i just love these things . . stackable, durable, shower proof - they just work.

you can even make them into a table top =]

(after years of buying the cheap crappy ones that just break)

we mainly roll with the 64L and 84L boxes. - they stack together perfect.

we also have a couple of the 35L boxes fpr the Camp Kitchen/Dry food. (keeps the critters out)

this wont be news to most i guess, but we've trialled using vacuum bags from amazon for all of the bedding. we're using home duvets and pillows and vacuum packing them before we go away. then when away i have a ryobi inflator/deflator and that has just enough power in it to get them back into the van. the vacuum at home packs them much smaller, but on the way home we usually have lots more space cos theres less beer and snacks in the van ;)

@bytejunkie

Snap - us too.

we went for the kit with a manual pump as a backup.

but use the 12v airpump on deflate as i can. - but the hand pump work well enough.

we dint realise at first but you dont even need the pump . . . you can roll up or sit on the bags so the air comes out via the valve then just put the outer cap on. - easy

Really useful tip…..

the 35xl box ( bigger lid ) will allow 1.5 ltr bottles upright

when packing clothes always use clear boxes ( easy to find your socks in a hurry ) and for all you Greta fans .. Bandq do an ’Earth range ‘

@Loz. Cheers for that - ordered one from their eBay shop. Weirdly, it's the same price (£18.99) but delivery is included on eBay whereas CampervanBits seem to charge for standard shipping on top if you order from their website. Again, thanks.

Death to mosquitoes.

Cooking Top-Tip

After the weekend at Camper Site with some challenging uneven ground . . .

This fixed the problem of the camp stove wanting to slide off the table, while trying to make a brew or bacon sandwich.

we used these slip-mats, cut to size and stored in the box for next time.

didnt get too hot or melt.

we even used the Really Useful storage box as a cooking table / platform . . .

Happy Dayz.

Ships all over the world have used acres of the stuff for decades, it can keep your plate in front of your face in a decent storm, however it doesn’t keep the food on the plate.

Beer Tip. = £0 free

again uneven ground can be a pain . . . especially when you need to put your beer down.

This little trick is one from the Car Race weekend scene . . I've done it for years.

- Find location.
- settle down,
- by Beer from Beer tent,
- Remove Boots,
- Put Beer in Boots.
- Finish Beer,
- Put Boots back on,
- Go Home.

+++++++++++++

The real trick is to buy 4x beers as the ques are always a nightmare,
hold beers 1&2 in hands and drink away merrily,
place beers 3&4 in boots for after,
replace empty beers 1&2 with full beers 3&4,
put boots back on,
go back to bar and repeat.

+

Then see below for hangover cure the following day !

+++++++++++++
