Feedback on slide-out idea

Hi all,

Please could I get your feedback on an idea I have? I want to really maximise storage whilst also having a useable camper. I’m thinking of getting a T6 LWB and we do a lot of adventure sports and so need to transport a lot of kit (more than I suspect most want to transport in a camper), as well as camp in the van. I’ve been wondering about building a box the full width and height of the aperture at the rear of the van, and the full length from the second row of seats to the rear, that slides out when the tailgate is up. We could fill this with gear and it would sit behind the seats when driving, then slide out and stay out to create some living space in the void when camping.

I can’t find much sign of this being done before for the T6. The closest is something no longer in production called a DoubleBack. Here’s a YouTube video of it:

What does everyone think? I would appreciate your help in working out if/how to make this a reality. Many thanks.

I suspect the problem would be finding a suitable strong sliding mechanism and a way of making it weather tight whilst the tailgate is up. I think the best option is for a pop-top. Maybe check out places like CJL Campers - they do some great conversions aimed at the sports-market including things like rear garages etc. to house bikes & gear and wash stations etc.
Failing that maybe a LWB T6 is too small a van and a Sprinter / Crafter size would be a more suitable base vehicle?

I think Greenline in the North East used to do something like that several years ago, but are more conventional now.
