Cambelt + Water Pump Replacement - Official guidance

My local VW dealer quoted £702 for this work. 2 VW specialists coming in at £550 inc VAT (genuine vw parts) and £398 inc VAT (not vw parts). I’m liking the cheaper option but does anyone have experience of the non VW parts being less durable, or causing warranty issues (I have about 9 months of an extended warranty left)?

If it's a VW warranty, I suspect any non-VW parts would be an issue. Indeed, even a non-VW warranty might be a problem. Insurance companies will use even the smallest excuse to get out of paying.

I would go for genuine parts from TPS so you get the latest revision of the part (ECP buy the old superseded stock with the factory markings ground off- its superseded for a reason) and use a good specialist who knows the vehicles inside out like Bognor Motors. Even vehicles in factory warranty can be serviced at somewhere like BM as they use genuine parts and follow ELSA.
If you go for the cheapest even out of warranty, I’m my experience you are rolling the dice, BUT for some people this is the only option and I get that, unfortunately it could also cost more in the long run.

Had my cambelt and waterpump done today £576 inc at Cordwalliss Maidenhead 17 plate T30 102 29000 miles the vans a keeper (Camper ) hopefully 10 years plus if I'm spared so better safe than sorry!!

just booking mine in at a local specialist - 49300 and just 4 years old - £529 seems ok for cam belt, water pump and aux belt - £300 cheaper than Cardiff VW!
Looking to get same work done around Cardiff area. Same age and mileage too.
Who was the garage and did they use genuine parts?
Thanks

It's sad to read these posts from a distance...UK owners who have been deceived by the local UK private importer who has decided to milk UK owners for profit when world wide VW recommends cam belt change at 220,000km and 10 years. There was an issue with some faulty T6 cam belts and a recall was issued, but the UK importer decided to hide the recall from owners unless they came in to one of their official dealers for a service, so those who used private shops had to pony up for new engines.

This info has been on the forum for ages. One UK owner and forum member who decided to follow up with the UK importer asking why the UK service schedule was different than VW's recommendations was told that that information "was not available to be shared."

Just had mine replaced while in for a service @ VW Llandudno. Again, as per above, £576. Brake fluid change £38. Both were negotiated in a nice civilised manner. I wouldn’t go anywhere else as they are fab.

Hi quick question
Am I better using vw or a Indy garage for cam belt and water pump
And if a Indy does any one have any recommendations?
Cheers firthy

You in warranty period?

What location for an Indy?

Get a quote from both..

Indy will most likely use oem parts.

I’ve just phoned vw 570 all in cambelt and water pump
Booked it as i did not think it was a bad price

Fixed price it seems from the dealer £570+VAT from Breeze VW in Poole (I'm booked in early December), local independent specialists (fitting OEM parts) were very similarly priced local to Poole (Dorset). Not bad at all from the dealer imo.

I’m sure she said 570 all in with the vat
Back brake pads and disc 408 I’ll do them myself and paint the callipers while I’m at it

Don't think about the costs... but after you have had it done its the peace of mind Knowing you looked after your engine for another 4 years..... its really worth it...

It's a fair price from the dealer (which is not a common phrase ever used by many!) and should come with the parts and labour guarantee of a dealership so I'd like to assume that's slightly more reassuring. It's on par in my experience with other VAG cars I've owned.
