Cambelt fitting advice please

That's a good price :)

Just sent an email to main dealer Lookers, Ballieston and they came back with the current recommended mileage of 140,000 miles and no time limit for cambelt change. Doesn't do anything to relieve my "cambelt paranoia " though :D
I remeber many folk on this forum getting theirs done at 40,00 miles or 4/5 years. Think I might try and figure out how to take the plastic cover off and do a visual inspection.
It was good old vw uk trying to con us … now in line with rest of world

My van is coming up to 10years old, and i'm having the belts done next week at an indy. I suspect that its got the water pump with the electrical connector. Earlier vans to mine didnt have that type. Would anyone know exactly what it does that the purely mechanical pump doesen't?

The water pump has a shroud around the impeller. It is designed to slow the coolant circulation when the engine is cold to heat up the coolant quicker. The issue we have found is that the shroud seizes closed and causes overheating problems.

Thanks, thats prettty much what the indy was saying. I think the intention is to fit the previous set up, without the shroud.

I bought my 2015 T5.1 at 169k miles. In my naivety I didn’t check the history and assumed it would have had a timing belt change but could find no evidence of such.
When I had it done the technician said “It was looking a bit tired.”
The point being I think VW must know that belts will outlast the recommended service interval by a large safety factor so, hopefully, this will help some folks “timing belt paranoia.”
Also I’m pretty sure my service book says 120k km (76k miles ) is the recommended interval! Which is where my 2016 camper is now so I think I will get it done before my France trip in September.

I know a few people who have done that. Just tuck the plug out the way. As far as I know there has been no issues.

I think 10 years is a good point to do it irrelevant of miles unless you’ve reached the 120k
