Awesome 3-in-1 Battery Bank - How I done It -
Now normally I don't post specific threads on kit . . . . . . but I had to this time.
As some of you may know im into portable power . . . whether that be battery, solar, petrol genny, USB power banks or what ever i love it.
The term Solar-Generator has been around now in the states and i hate it. Its an oxymoron if you ask me, but referes to a "Power Generator with Solar".
The idea is that Fuel-burning Generators (Gas,LPG,Derv) are bad for the environment and a new ECO way had be devised . . .
So what they come up with is a Lithium battery pack, bolted on a mains inverter, then added a solar charge controller for recharging - simples -]
You have already seen these about in the wild . . . . . You heard of Goal Zero? (Nice but VERY expensive £/W/Wh)
Now before we go any further . . . . These devices will not replace Gas,LPG,Derv Gennys of say 600w up or Gennys that are running all day.
BUT for 600Wish and below, and for shorter duration's they are perfect. . . .

************************************************
Dell, where are you going with this? - hear you say.
Well i keep a close eye on all these technologys on a daily basis, im constantly checking manufactures websites, checking out YouTube for new kit reviews and scouring the web for the next thing.
what i know is that GoalZero was one of the first to market and as such has a Brand Name some may recognize, there are others.
i also know that this tech is normally priced at around £1 per watt hour so £500 for a 500wh unit,
Goal zero is more like £2 per wh, or £830 for the Yeti 400
So its very expensive right !!! - well then i stumbled across this unit for 64p per wh !!! ( £239.99 for 372Wh or 10500mAh capacity)
Yep you heard that right - 10500mAh cappacity !!!!!!!!
Now I've had mine for 3 weeks testing and love it . . . . in fact so much I've yet today bought a second one =]
(though i would get in before you greedy lot) (they state long delivery times, but the first one arrived in 3days from the UK)

From my experience these are the IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT LITHIUM batteries:

DO NOT OVER CHARGE THEM, (USE A CHARGER FIT FOR PURPOSE)

DO NOT RUN THEM 100% FLAT, (TRY TO RECHARGE BEFORE 10-20%)

STORE THEM AT 50% IF PUT INTO STORAGE FOR A TIME,

USE THE CORRECT CHARGER / METHOD, (LITHIUM PROFILE OR SUPPLIED CHARGER)

DO NOT SUBJECT THEM TO HIGH TEMPS (IN VAN/CAR/TENT/CAMPER ETC) (KEEP BELOW 30degC) **** MOST IMPORTANT ****

DO NOT SUBJECT THEM TO VERY LOW TEMPS/FREEZING (IN VAN/CAR/TENT/CAMPER ETC) (below 0degC)

DONT LET THEM GET WET (IE OUT IN THE RAIN) UNLESS THEY ARE IP RATED

STICK WITH A KNOWN BRAND NAMES,

REMEMBER YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR, SO CHEAP UNBRANDED IMPORTS MAY HAVE SUBSTANDARD PARTS THAT MAY HAVE FAILED QUALITY CONTROL WITH OTHER MANUFACTURERS.

STAY AWAY FROM LIPO CELLS. (older lithium tech)

so what have I been using it for:?
well, first off in Lockdown I have been using the USB ports as a mobile USB Powerbank . . .~
and the USB-PD will charge my phone @ 60W !!!
I also run the 12v (12v socket) tyre pump to pump up the Car tyre the other day as it was low.
I also had a hair cut in the bathroom with my 240v head shavers . . .
I charged the kids phone on the wireless top charger.
I used the LED lights as it was getting dark in the garden.
I used it in the garden to run the 12v tyre pump for the kids' bikes.. (and mine)

That looks great! Have you charged it with the solar panel yet?
Not yet, I'm waiting for some power pole connectors to arrive so I can make up a lead. . . .

I've been using the 60W USB-PD power supply - it's a faster charge than the included power supply =]

The Solar input of the ALLPOWERS is "Anderson" "powerpole" or Anderson torberry connectors
ALLPOWERS have a MC4 cable example over here :

1588062872957.png

So you could either use MC4 connectors,
or the Victron quick disconnect or others as you see fit.

here is the other option the do for power panels.

Generally, I use MC4 for solar panel sides and Anderson Connectors for Power sides.

********************
the CTEK has its own internal MPPT controller, so you connect just the plain panel to it.
The ALLPOWERS again implies it has a internal controller and shows the panel directly connected to it..... BUT i believe its 50W MAX !
EDIT: Solar Charger Input/Anderson Power Solar Input: 12V-22V/3.2A(Max.)

*********************************
the CTEK as shown above has a max VOC of 23v

********************************
so a 50W panel may be max for the ALLPOWERS and as 100w panel may be max for the CTEK,
so you could get 2x50W panels,
use 1x50W for the ALLPOWERS and then use 2x50W (in parallel) for the CTEK.

*******************************
But think it will be more efficient to just use a 100W panel connected to the CTEK, then charge the ALLPOWERS via the 12V input?

*****************************
unless you NEED to use the ALLPOWERS OFFGRID, in which case you need a 50W panel.

HERE IS THE OFFICIAL REPLY FROM ALLPOWERS TECH SUPPORT:

Dear friend,

Good day and so sorry for a delay, for your concorns, to be honest, the solar input port is designed for solar charging actually as it is equipped with MPPT regulating. (It will handle up to 60W Max. per hours) so we recommend to connect a 50-100W solar panel for recharging. (Solar charging effects a lot by sunlight condition. )

The user guide states ' last sheet state that'input MAX of 12V-22V/3.2A (MAX)

Actually only the votlage of your panel are relly matters, so for those using their own solar panel, make sure that Optimum Operating Voltage of your solar panel is between 16.6-22V to be compatible with our Solar generator.

For the current, the current that deliver into our generator actually depends on how many amps our generator accept per hours only, since it only accept 3.2A max, a 8A should be fine,

Yes, you can have the 150W panel provided below the VOC of 22v to our generator even if the panel MAX amps is 8A(It will delivers 3.2A in reality.)

We hope this information helps.

主题:AllPowers 372wh. (AP-SS-005) + solar charging.

**********************************************************
from my email to them:

Hello ALLPOPWERS.
Please can you help clear up some confusion with the AllPowers 372wh. (AP-SS-005) + solar charging.
What is the MAX size solar panel I can connect to the input DC5525 DC JACK?
Does the DC JACK have an internal MPPT?
What is the MAX size solar panel I can connect to the ANDERSON POWERPOLE?
Does the ANDERSON POWERPOLE have an internal MPPT?
The user guide states 50-100W panel in the charging chart, but the port shows input MAX of 12v-22v/3.2A (MAX)?
Can I connect up a 150W panel provided its below the VOC of 22v? even if the panel MAX amps is say 8A?
Can I over panel the Anderson input?

************************************************
so you can use any panel array without a solar controller.
Provided the panel VOC is 22v MAX
the MAX panel current can be whatever (say 8A) becuase the ALLPOWERS will only take 3.2A
so the MAX Solar charge rate would be (w=v*a) 22v*3.2a=70.4 theoretical max
-15% for efficiency losses and you get 60W MAX

Interesting product, seems like it would be perfect for those situations where you need some portable power. Being able to plug a 3 pin mains plug into it to charge a laptop or similar is excellent

How does the cost compare to a basic leisure battery setup?
this wouldnt replace a Leisure battery setup, but would enhance it.

so im using this as MOBILE POWER, where as a Leisure battery is fixed in the van.

Doesn't a leisure battery hold more charge/have more capacity though? (battery dependent I know)
Yes a Leisure battery could hold more stored power . . .
but this is a third the size and weight of a standard leisure battery so its portable.
ie;
  • take it round the campfire with you.
  • use it in the tent or awning for power.
  • use it for the air pump for your air beam tent.
  • use it at home in the garage, garden or driveway.
  • its so portable you can take it almost anywhere.
  • so im using it as well as a leisure battery.
  • in the van you could off-load all your phone, tablet, laptop charging and make the Leisure battery last longer.

you could use it as backup power if there is no sun for your solar . . .

How long does this unit take to charge from mains ?

Use a couple of 50watt led flood lights on a small generator as temp lighting occasionally , how long (hrs) do you think it would last with this load ?

what are the specs on the LED lights?

have you got a pic of the info lable?

are they 12v dc or 240vac?

the 50W normally relates to the light output and not the power drawn.

show us the spec, web link, pics and well see.

I have an electric coolbag that probably draws around 50W (don't know for sure though), which at 12V is then about 4A, is that right? How does the maths work to calculate how long it would last please?

This is all hypothetical in my case
