Window Trim

Afternoon everyone.

I'm about to buy some aftermarket windows to replace the 4th set of OEM flush slide windows as I've had a pants full of them leaking.

Do I need the "U trim" for the after market windows or do they fit straight in, instead of the originals with no trim required.

Many Thanks..

Looks like @davecdjt has done the same according to his post in this thread.

From what I’ve read the blacked out edges on the aftermarket windows doesn’t always cover the metal edges of the OEM opening.

Finally, I’m sure someone was looking for an OEM sliding window in ‘Wanted’ to try and improve the seal without destroying their own window (or causing more problems!) Donating your window to a worthy cause might benefit the rest of us with seal improvements - a bit like donating your body to science :)

I had mine replaced by the converter to match the windows they fitted in the rear quarters. The drivers side was already carpeted and is neat, the sliding door is the only bit that is left looking unfinished. I’ll post some photos of my setup. If you check the link @Paynewright shared you’ll see the blanks that are available to ‘finish’ the surrounds a little better.

Thanks for the reply. So would the "U trim" go over the bits where the blank inserts would be fitted?

Thanks for all the answers so far. So if fitting aftermarket windows, is the trim required? Sorry if im confused

In your case, since it's replacing factory fit window which has a good finished edge to the cutout in the steel, u-trim is optional.

Is it possible to buy the u trim? If so where from? I’d like to take a look at whether it would tidy up the surrounds of my window.

If you look on YouTube on search VW T6 windows, there will be loads of videos where the U trim is used. Kiravana is a good one, as is Camperglass, otherwise known as Transporter HQ.

Thanks for the reply. Think I'll get some and decide on the day of fitting the aftermarket ones.

Update: had the windows fitted on Friday and to be fair, they don't look that bad. However, when the van was carpeted, it already was a Kombi with the OEM windows

Unfortunately the window behind the driver's side didn't have enough carpet to be tucked neatly, so the u trim had to be used.

However, on reflection the trim does look distorted and I'm not a fan. So thinking of having the trim taken off and just carpet right upto the edge of the window. Or am I being to OCD.

I've attached some pics. What's your views? Leave as is or without trim?

Thanks everyone

Try knocking the trim on with a straight edge between the trim and hammer, it should go on straight them. Something like a piece of wood batten.

It's on as far as it can go. I think it could be because of the little sections where the little inserts go which causes the dips. Arghhhh

Is that the J-Trim but installed the wrong way around? The pic below shows U-Trim next to J-Trim. The J-Trim is shorter on one side and this should be on the outside of the van so there is more area for the window bond. The long side of the J-Trim should be on the inside. Maybe this is why you're seeing the distortion?

I don’t know if this would help, but I hated the u-trim the installers put on mine so pulled it out and replaced with this plastic inner frame. Much better.

I’d like to see some more pictures of the plastic trim please! Where did you get it from? Is it designed for that purpose or have you adapted its purpose? I’d like to tidy up this unfinished frame.

Does anyone know if there are replacement trim options for the metal outside trim of the sliding window? I have what was black but now shiny metal trims that I would prefer to be black. Or is it a metal painting job?
