What Have You Done To Your Van Today?

I’ve had the two new Michelin Agilis Crossclimates fitted to the rear and the one good tyre that came off moved to the spare. 😃 I was told that there are new rules coming in within the next couple of years that will make any tyre over 5 years old illegal and an MOT fail. That will be an expensive rule if it comes in. 🤔 My 10 year old, otherwise fine spare with 7mm on will be no good.

That's news to me, I wonder when we'll hear of this?!?!

The tyre dealers will need to up their game and supply very freshly made tyres then. I just fitted two new tyres to my own car and they are already 8 months old.

Yes, and you’d be looking carefully at a new vehicle because the tyres could be half dead before they’ve turned more than delivery miles. Personally, I can’t see what is wrong with the MOT system we have? If they try to bring that rule in it’ll make someone in government very, very unpopular.

If they do that, how will they hit their green targets? Emissions will be through the roof making and disposing of tyres!

There would be way too many cars running with illegal tyres between MOT/servicing. We have extended service intervals or some EVs with almost no service intervals, and once they introduce the 4 2 2 Mots.....

I certainly won't be holding my breath waiting on the introduction of this

Thats fine by me. Tyres essentially dry out as the silica compound evaporates over time and the tyre loses its ability to conform to and grip the road surface at a macroscopic level. 6 years in regular use is considered the safe limit for tyres in daily use and that is what is under consideration (low mileage use on tyres stored out of UV in a dark garage can be stretched to 10.)

I spent half my career scraping people off the tarmac so have seen first hand how critical that patch of rubber the size of your palm is. You haven't lived until you've had to get a colleague to hose out someone's brain matter from the tread in the soles of your boots.

Barely worn 9 year old tyres is what killed Paul Walker. If you're sensible you'd be regarding your 10 year old spare as scrap already and shouldn't consider using it on the road no matter how dire the need. The fact that someone knows they have a decade old tyre aboard and aren't considering its replacement is worrying.

In April I replaced all 4 tyres on my Volvo at 10 years old, even though they'd only done 3000 miles (its a summer show car only) and still had the moulding hairs on them. My life and wellbeing and that of my family and innocent bystanders are worth far more than the 700 poxy quid it cost me (the spare had already been replaced.)

If 6 years is considered the safe liimit, I'd be intetested to hear the justification for introducing a 5 year limit.

Anyone serious about addressing road safety concerns would prioritise the removal of substandard and dangerous drivers from our roads, not introducing a policy that will incentivise people to buy dodgy remoulds in preference to premium tyres.
 
I read about some chap died in similar circumstances when a tyre popped at speed on his MGB. The boots were fine for wear, but 25 years old!

Things not to go cheap on - cancer medicine, condoms and tyres. Anything else be my guest, but why people place a higher priority on their wallet than their life just mystifies me.
 
Picked the van up yesterday afternoon from Bognor Motors after they had fitted their BVMS Edition suspension kit. What a difference!

I deliberately took the bumpy way home and was immediately impressed with how the ride had improved. Nothing is going to iron out the Wembley Stadium sized potholes, but apart from that everything is so much smoother.

A big thank you to everyone at BVMS.

Question... Are the 'old' suspension bits and pieces any use to anyone? Should I post them on here, or just stick them in the back of the shed and throw them out in 2 years' time?

I managed to sell mine old suspension for £200 on eBay was few months wait but some money back

It’s not hard but there few pieces to remove both side pilars then any handle then middle light and then sun shades you need remove plastic covers first then there 2 screws on each end on swing end there 2 different size screws and when I put mine back I broke plastic from small screw as fitted 1st should fix big one first then small one glued that plastic 3 times already and for now it’s holding some how
