VW T5.1 Multivan suspension alternatives

Hi everyone,

My first post here. I recently bit the bullet and bought a T5.1 2014 LWB Multivan, 2.0 diesel (CCHA, 2wd) with a 6 speed manual. However, the ride quality atm. is pretty bad and crashy over obstacles and potholes, as well as quite bouncy on highways.

Previous owner had fitted Eibach Pro lowering springs:
Front: G/V 118501302VA
Rear: G/X 118501303RA

I find these are basically generic, as they fit all of the same model vans irrespective of the axle weight (mine is 1600 on both axles with a 3080 gross, T30 spec most likely, judging by the front struts).
I got underneath the van and the rear spring is coil bound, thus probably not providing any suspension at all.
The struts seem do be original and probably are not coping with the lowered springs and/or are also quite worn.
Surprisingly when turning the front is quite pointy and the van does not seem to roll much at all, but this is probably due to the stiff springs.
The front is now sitting at 42cm wheel center to arch, the rears are around 39cm, thus a bit saggy with an empty van and almost empty fuel tank.

Any suggestions on how to solve this? I have read other threads etc. and many suggest to visit Steve at @CRS Performance , but I am from Latvia and that is unfortunately not an option. Ordering parts from UK is also quite expensive due to the additional import taxes etc.

My current idea is to swap rear springs to OEM (I asked and fortunately got the original springs from the seller), they are marked with 2 blue and 1 orange stripe (no idea what the spring rate is as I could not find any details about the colour coding). In addition I am thinking of ordering Poly lower spring rubbers from THQ, as there don't seem to be many other options? I read that Steve had ordered some from Powerflex a while ago, but they made them to a different and inferior spec and they are probably the ones still being sold.
Is there a point in changing the top rubbers to PU?
After seeing what height the OEM spring with PU rubbers gives me, I might look into getting Koni Special Active dampers as suggested by Steve from CRS in other threads, but they do not seem to be readily available and are sold out in many places. Quite expensive too coming in around 1000 eur in total. Would these work alright on the lowered front Eibach springs?

Are there maybe better options out there?
Should I look into other parts while I'm at it, like the upgraded T6 type front top strut mounts from Meyle etc?

Thinking of also adding 15mm spacers in the rear afterwards, as the 8J Cantera rim sits around 15 deeper in the arch than the front. Assume this would not affect the rear suspension at all since it is not a 4motion, other than providing greater leverage on the wishbone?

Best regards,
Janis

Hi, ouch that looks very uncomfortable and welcome to the forum. KONI would be my choice of Dampers/ shock absorbers but you also need longer springs that are better rated and that are suitable for your vehicle. I take your point about re importing from the UK especially as most things are made within the EU. By all means take advice from here and these pages and from @CRS Performance but you should easily find these things from your side of the Water. There are many outlets and specialists for suspension within the EU. My own personal choice would be to find the most appropriate springs and KONI adjustable Dampers. Many change to lower spring set up for looks only and the lower the more fashionable it seems it depends in what you are after. If your after the best most comfortable ride good handling stay at a reasonable height. It is possible to withstand a small drop from the original manufactures spec with the best dampers. Mine is a 4Motion and i have a preference for taller for off road use. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply.

I have the part numbers for Koni Special Active:
Front: 8705-1392
Rear: 8205-1009

Can find them probably somewhere, even though most places list out of stock for either both or at least one end.

The question is whether they would still be a good option with a 30-40mm drop from stock height? That is with the Eibach front springs for example?

I would really appreciate, if someone could suggest spring part numbers, especially the rears, from any manufacturer that would be a correct fit for a 30-40mm drop for this van and the increased axle weight (stock blue, blue, orange colour marking for rear). But I understand that this might be somewhat of a trade secret as well.

Most places I have searched for on this side of the pond either offer the typical options which are not a good fit for the rear, or don't sell parts directly and only do fitment. But driving to central EU just to do this would be a bit much. I am somewhat struggling to find a place where you could simply order these parts online, similar to the many places you guys have in UK. Part numbers would help a lot here.

Have a conversation with @CRS Performance . Very popular and knowledgable KONI Suspension Dealer supplier and fitter.
