Tailgate led lights

Evening,

Planning my electrics install and I am keen to put some bright LED downlights in the tailgate. Is it possible to somehow wire them so they come on automatically when the tailgate is opened? And turn off when it's closed. As well as having a switch to override this and turn them off even if the tailgate is open.

I'm sure there is tho suspect a manual switch would be a lot less work

Problem is that if you use the courtesy light circuit the LEDs will not go off completely, just dim. This is down to the bulb monitoring circuits. Use a switch, it's easier.

I concur with travelvolts, the switch will enable you to have them on for as long as you want as well, sometimes the courtesy lights will have timed out.. You could if really needed fit your own micro switch into the circuit to give auto on if really needed though. Also when you fit the light switch put it on perm illumination so that you can find it.. This is what I have done.
