Side Bars What's the Point ?

Are sidebars supposed to be for protection or are they cosmetic?

cheers

I would say both depending on what bars you have, I have turned in on a low wall at the end of someone’s drive before (not in my T6) and the bars touched before the van, much rather have a scratch on the bars than the paintwork but let’s be honest they only mount on small brackets and it does take much to bend them so little impact protection from them but certainly can help on a scrape
Bigger rounder bars poke out more than say the new style VW T6 angled ones that sit much closer to the vans sills so some help more than others

Plus depending how low the van is, they are pretty good at stopping morons with car doors that park right up against you and dent your perfectly straight T6.

I’ve only ever thought they were for looks and tying the dog and daughter to so they don’t wander to far. Always wanted a pair that would protect me from car doors but to date didn’t think it was possible as they all don’t stick out far enough ? May need to revisit this

Maybe not all car doors depending on how high the door is, but judging by the few marks on mine, that can only be caused by people knocking them, they work pretty well.

Excuse the James Bond style invisible pic! The van is there, you just have to find it....

thanks all

are any of them actual stainless steel? I notice some say chrome, which I suppose are therefore mild steel and will rust (?)

My black ones rusted in under two years :( £500 I expected them to last a little longer left them on the old velle.

I've got a pair of narrow side steps on my LWB Trafic 6-seater Sport, (I've just bought the T6 DSG to replace it), and they are still mint. Italian stainless steel. Got them online from one of the van specialists.

I am after a black set, but its putting me off that its mild steel, has any one got stainless then had them power coated?

As far as I was told, mine were the stainless, but powder coated by a local company for VW Leicester.

Powder coated is fantastic.......Until you get an issue. Then it's all tears and toys out of the pram. Only my opinion. I've seen some cr*p mind.

Brill, then that is the way I will be going, I would rather risk the coat coming off then the rust!
I am in your town Leicestershire tomorrow having a meeting in a LE18 post code

Just down the road from me in the dodgy part

I had black powder-coated bars fitted at new. Less than 12 months on and they're already going rusty. Took them off and waiting to hear from the dealer. I've told them I'm not refitting as they'll just go again. The dealer also butchered the floor pans to fit them, causing both sides to split and break over winter!!

They are also a massive pain to keep clean!!

Just been told that VW are going to replace mine under warranty - will have a brand new set available for purchase soon if anyone wants them?

That has to be a dodgy batch.
Ok mine are 6 months old, but I've done 15000 miles and a very hard winter and mine are still perfect.
