Insurance Companies

Well, I now have a quandary.
LV wanted an extra £219 for next year, so I rang A-Plan/Howdens.
They came back with a quote of £555.
Then I gave Caravan Guard a call and they've quoted me £343, BUT, I must have a Thatcham approved tracker fitted.
I have already got a Ghost, but as that is not Thatcham approved it doesn't count.
So, do I go with A-Plan/Howdens for £555, or Caravan Guard for £343 + £200ish (for the cheapest approved tracker) + £150ish (annual subscription)

What's that £200 tracker @Ali-G ? It makes sense for future years insurance to get something sorted soon. Sell some of that surplus gear you have stashed away?

@Ali-G I'd go with a tracker for the extra piece of mind, taking the insurance discount as an offset, but wouldn't go for the cheapest.
Easy to spend someone else's money though. MetaTrak would be my choice if I was in the market for one.

Result.
Caravan Guard quoted me £343 with a Thatcham Cat1 tracker fitted, or £358 with a Cat1 alarm.
After some research it seems that the T6 Highline comes with a Cat1 alarm from the factory.
So a quick phone call and an extra £15 to Caravan Guard and I'm covered for another year for £291 less than LV wanted for renewal and £72 less than LV charged me last year.

Just in the process of having to find insurance after Brentacre would no longer cover me. tried all the usual places - A-plan, A Flux, Just Kampers.
They were all between £1380 - £1750 - this is going from £500 last year this was a kick in the nuts.
A friend of mine works in insurance and recommended going on Quotezone.co.uk/van-insurance/modified.

I’ve managed to get a price of £1075 through One Click.
Still double but better than the usual guys.

(This is on a 2018 T28 doing 20000 miles for work)
Interestingly the best way I got a cheap let quote was multi cover through admiral

£1300 for my 22 plate t32 Kombi. Zone 3 london. 12k miles a year parked on street.
Even though horrific - not as bad as I was expecting

How does a stand alone AV policy work?
I’m assuming that they pay the difference between what your main insurer pays at “market value” and their “agreed value” in the event of a total loss.
Could that get messy? i.e. the AV insurer arguing the toss with the main insurer over what the “market value” is to try and minimise their payout.
I have no experience of these types of policy.

In theory, both insurers should be using the same data to assess market value, so there shouldn't be a need to squabble. In practice, the delta is often trivial when compared to the agreed value, so it's cheaper for both insurers to agree to meet in the middle rather than waste time and resources arguing over a few quid. Either way, the AV insurer is ultimately obliged to pay the difference between the agreed value and the amount paid out by the primary insurer.

Hi all, the same 3 insurance companies are topping my comparison charts - Rightsure, Brightside and Van Line Direct. I've never heard of them. Am I being too cautious dis regarding them and going for a name I know. Small print and selected options look right. Its a T6 kombi no mods. Also dumb question but all 3 are underwritten by Ageas, but going to them direct is twice the price. Wondered why that would be? cheers

I wouldn't worry - Ageas are a reputable underwriter and it is they who'll be paying-out in the event of a claim. Also, there's nothing unusual about specialist brokers being cheaper than going direct to the very insurer that that broker uses.

Soon to be new owner of T6.1 kombi then professionally converting. Full value c.£75k. Struggling to get sensible quotes for insurance. A-plan, just campers, Adrian flux, admiral and caravan guard all >£700pa with Adrain Flux currently winning this poor race. Any further recommendations from this wisest of communities ? Thanks.

Hi @dcw72 , just make sure you get an Agreed Value Policy. I paid an additional £75 with Adrian Flux through a company called Trinity Lane. Don't take out a policy without an agreed value!
Welcome to our 'select' club!
Send photos as soon as you can! We love photos!

Thanks Drive Wayne, we are following this advice on the calls. Just struggle with how much the insurers want and that's with a scorpion cat5 fitted ! Photo will follow early summer.

You could try Comfort (sub-brand of Aviva) - worked well for me, though you will need an S5 tracker at that value. If it's a brand new van, then they do a new-for-old for the first 3 years, so no need for a Agreed Value policy.

It seems the dreaded insurance premium hikes extend to home insurance too - our renewal premium was 57% more than last year. Shopped around and managed to contain the increase to a "mere" 30%. :(
