Comfortable Suspension (My Opinion)

Just thought I would provide my opinion here in case someone is considering upgrading their suspension. I have a T6.1 T32 Kombi, running on 18" wheels, which now carries very little weight. Soon after I had the van, I installed Eibach Comfort adjustable lowering springs and had the van dropped approximately 40mm. They transformed the front end. The back end was a little harsh but as I was carrying weight at the time, they worked really well and the van was so much nicer to drive over the standard suspension.

Forward on a couple of years and I am no longer carrying weight and this is when the back end starts to feel stiff. I looked around for something more comfortable and initially got recommended to the Solow NXT Coilover Kit and was told that this would be far more comfortable than my current setup. The sales info even states that "We believe this is the most comfortable Coilover on the market". All I can say is that within the 20 minute drive home, I contacted the fitter, who is approved by Solow, to remove them as they really did not meet my interpretation of comfortable. The suspension was unbearably stiff, especially on the rear, making it a far more harsh ride than the Eibach springs. In addition when stopping from a very slow speed, the van would rock slightly which was an odd feeling. I got the install rechecked by the fitter in case there were any issues but there were not. There was also no offer of a refund, so I lost out on that installation.

I then used this forum and got directed to Steve from @CRS Performance who provided several options and explained to me what he would install and why. I was quite cautious having been misguided previously. The difference was that Steve did not want a deposit up front and would only take payment once I was happy with the install. If I was not happy he would provide another solution. He talked me through the options and I settled with their Definition System. All I can say is what a service! The guys at CRS Performance took about an hour to complete the works and true to his word no payment was taken until we took the van out for a test drive. The results were superb, it really is so much more comfortable than the Solow NXT Coilovers. Its also more comfortable than the Eibach springs, but you cannot compare these as they are different price points. I think that the Eibach springs have their place, especially for those on a budget as they do lower the van and make it look much better. But if you are in the market for Coilovers then I would highly recommend giving CRS Performance a shout.

Please note that this is my opinion only based on my experience. I was specifically after soft and comfortable setup for a van carrying very little weight and that's what has been achieved. What I failed to do with the Solow Coilovers, was to try a vehicle with the setup first, so that was my mistake as that setup did not meet my requirements. I would highly recommend, if possible, driving a vehicle with your chosen suspension first before outlaying your hard earned cash. With CRS Performance, Steve took me out in a van on site before working on mine to make sure I would be happy with the setup and also if I didn't like the setup installed on my van, he would look for options until something suitable was found.

Hi. I had their Definition Kit which is Koni dampers and H&R Springs.

I guess it will be different for you as you are a T28 and also a T6. I would estimate around £1200 to £1500 but contact Steve at @CRS Performance and I am sure he will be happy to give you a price.

It's "comforting" to know about another good review for Steve the guys at CRS. I'm booked in for a similar treatment there this Saturday.
It's always a little daunting, the though of handing over some hard earned cash in the hope that it's going to solve a bugbear most of us endure with Transporter ownership.
I hope I have a similar experience and outcome. I'll post on this thread my honest opinion in any case.

Let us know how your drive home is!!!

So, had my trip to CRS earlier today, I went for H&R coilovers and a drop of 70mm (390mm from wheel centre to wheel arch). All I can say is wow!

The transformation is night and day. It's such a shame the drive home was mainly motorway. Where the van was so crashy over things like manhole covers, broken tarmac, anything vaguely like a pothole, the van just soakes it all up.

I can't reiterate all the praise there is for the service from the guys @CRS Performance

There's not a chance you are leaving there unless you and Steve are 100% happy with the results.

The van obviously looks better for the drop, but that wasn't the reason I went for the upgrade, it's just a lovely bonus.

I must add the van is obviously a lot stiffer and planted than it was before, and any changes in pitch and roll in the road are transferred into the van a lot quicker. It's not uncomfortable or unwanted, just different. I like it, it drives more like a car.

Thanks again CRS

Great post and reasuring that there is actually a solution. CRS is a bit of distance from me. My problem is I’ve got aftermarket coilovers that are apparently corroded without the tools to adjust. The ride is awful. It’s a T6.1 camper conversion. I just wondered how long CRS took to do yours ie was it a full day or a few hours? Mine will probably be longer if they have to get the corroded coilovers off. Like you I don’t want to pay out for limited difference in ride. I’ve already gone from 20’s to 18’s within premium tyres with little improvement. Had to change the wheels as the conversion company has put not load bearing 20’s on with cheap aftermarket suspension just to make it look good to sell!

Have you tried to see what state your current set up is in ?
How corroded? How old are they and what make are they ?
Just trying to gauge whether it's worth trying to free them up and adjust them or just ditch the lot and start again .

If you want your current coilovers removing it won’t take the guys @CRS Performance long at all…. the corrosion will be on the threaded outer shaft (where you would adjust the suspension up and down). In the original post he said it took about an hour to complete the works.

I travel up from Andover to @CRS Performance and they take about an hour to do the job. Worth the drive!

Yes as I say they an unidentifiable according to VAG and slightly corroded so they said it will take some time to get them off. Also they didn’t have the tools to adjust them and said it wouldn’t make much difference to the ride even if they could. I am taking it to a local suspension specialist for a tier 1 assessment and to provide options but I was wondering how long it took CRS to do the new suspension to establish whether I had time to drive there and back in and they do it in a day. If it’s doable I’ll send the report to them and see what they say.

I think the garage said something about potentially being seized as they have been on for circa 5 years. All speculation until I get it assessed obvs.

I can't see getting them off being much of a problem if you intend to bin them.
C spanners are readily available if you deem them worthy of a clean up and see if you can free the adjusters .
Depends whether your gonna try to undertake this yourself or 'pay a man' to whether it's financially worth spending too much labour time faffing around .

That’s encouraging but pay a man unfortunately. I’ll get them to do the tier 1assessment and if something can be done easily then if they think it’s worth it then I will otherwise I’ll get them to provide options and also see what CRS suggest. Cheers

The only thing seized will be the locking collars, the shocks will drop out.

Look like eBay specials to me…

CRS have a great rep on here but there are others closer to you, aren’t Bognor Motors near Bristol?
