Carista - How I Done It -

Looking for some Carista help please anyone!! I’ve got the dreaded engine mgmt light…

So it’s plugged in and paired, and I’ve changed the Beep on lock setting. So it’s definitely connected…but against “engine” it’s says “cannot connect”. Has anyone had this? Can’t find anything on line for this.

what year and spec van?

I bought one ages ago and used the free trial to adjust some setting (dial sweep etc).
Can I now subscribe and use the original dongle or do I have to buy another plus a subscription?

just subscribe with the same hardware.

Any idea why the carista has a permanent live feed? I thought the ignition needed to be on to run any diagnostics or change any settings anyway?

The obd2 port has a perm battery feed.

But the BCM Carista talks too is ign powered.

So you need to remove the dongle when not in use to stop battery drain.

Thanks Dell. In that, would the Carista module actually need to be resoldered/rewired? If you just cut the pin off wouldn't it work OK anyway?

Also, separate but vaguely linked Q. Do I need a Carista subscription to be able to keep an eye on particulate build up?

@benp1 you can check the particulate build up without subscription - I use the beta version of Carista (free to download) to see this - not sure if it can be checked in the ‘normal’ version.

if you cut the pin only it wont work.

but some ppl had made a modification where they have cut the pin and soldered a wire to pickup a IGN feed.

that way it can be left connected permanently.

this link shows you how to mod Carista so it only powers up when ignition on.

Just be aware that ignition live on pin 1 is a VW group proprietary extension to OBD2 standard connector pinout. Meaning the Carista dongle might not work in other brand vehicles any more after the mod - for me that wasn't a deal breaker.

Gents........I have the Carista (currently not subscribing) but I was wondering if it can be used on my wife's mini as well......presumably with a new subscription? Also, back to VW........is it wise to force a regen? What are the do's and don'ts?
Thanks guys

So as you can see, its as simple as that . . . . . just click and select.

The cleaver guys at Carista will do all the hard work for you at HQ and puch the new customizations over the internet to you phone . . . . then through the dongle and recode your motor.

The link for it on amazon is here : https://amzn.to/395VrwX

the link for HQ is here :
Carista OBD2 App | Diagnose, customize and service your car

and below is the pricing structure:

Oh, and if you have Tourqe . . . . . . . . . . it works with that too!

Now its not a dealer level tool, nor is it VCDS, But if your just looking as an end-user looking to add a few tweeks to your motor then its perfect.

More advance diagnostics like reading PID`s, Bi-directional control, module coding etc is more a job for VCDS or others . . . . but well cover that a different day.

So that my little look at Carista for you all.

Would I recommend it? – Yes absolutely. For £15 it will give you an insight into the world of fault codes and what those orange lights on the dash mean. It can help you decide if the fault is serious or not and most importantly give you knowledge when you take your van into the dealer knowing what the problem is before they try and baffle you with science.

Also dont forget that fault codes alone are not an excuse to change parts . . . . . . a decent motor tech will take the fault codes as an indication of a fault and direction. Then carry out proper diagnostics in the area to find the exact fault and test each component until the exact problem has been identified.

I'll do a quick video that will be accompany this just so you get a idea of a live demonstration.

I Hope that answers some questions, any comments or suggestions leave them below.

If you would like any other videos or write ups comment below or drop me a PM.

Have a great day and remember with . . . . . Carista – Knowledge is power -

As always, spectacular feedback from the TOP man !! Only got my Carista ( and VAG DPF app) for DPF monitoring but this shows me far more things I can use it for.
