Cam Belt Change requirement

old thread I know but the way i would look at this is how long you keeping the van?

say 10 years;
change every 4 you would have paid for a new belt twice and be selling a van with 2 years left on the belt which wouldn't put a buyer off,
change every 5 years you are selling a van that you have either paid for one new belt and it needs a change now (buyer will want a discount) or you have paid twice and the van has a brand new belt on (might help put the price up a bit I guess),
change every 7 you have paid once but the new belt will have done 3 years when you come to sell and a buyer would probably argue there is only one year left (on VWs 4 year cycle) and look to push price down,
change every 10 years and you are either selling a van with a 10 year old belt (buyer will want a discount to cover the cost of a new one) or you would have just put a new belt on, and will saved 50 quid a year over the 10 years of ownership and and the new owner gets the benefit of the new belt.

So I guess over a 10 year ownership period either change every 4 years and pay twice or change every 10 years and only pay once but live with the risk of a failure. Personally I would rather have a new belt on my van when I'm driving it rather than fitting one for the next owner and not take the risk of an expensive failure and have factored the price in for next year.

If somebody wants a van they’ll buy it whether it needs servicing or not, there’s no obligation to discount because it’s due a service.
I don’t remember an occasion when I have visited a main dealer or independent specialist where they haven’t recommended additional work, it’s how they generate business.
By the time the worry merchants have got you replacing everything in case it breaks, taking out extra warranty on your washing machine, life insurance, pet insurance, paying for your funeral in advance etc your wallet will be significantly lighter.

Hi @JOG. I use Vantech VW at Uckfield. Van specialists, they are friendly and very knowledgeable. Thoroughly recommend, and won’t be going anywhere else now.

I use Vantech in Runcorn, the chap saw that I had recently changed the oil and filter and on my oil change and inspection service didn’t change it, pleasantly surprised indeed. Bill was reduced too. Nothing but good feedback on Vantech.

Hi everyone just joined as i have just purchased a T6 2016 plate.
I have a question, i spoke to VW and asked about the cam belt renew, they told me it needs replacing either at 120k miles or 4 years.
It had a service at 74k it now has 77k should i renew the cambelt yet.
I’ve had the same t6 vw since new, now done 60,000 miles, time for a belt change?

Yeah just had my done, to me it feels better. Mines only 52k and an early T6. I had no records of it being done so got it for peice of mind really.

Cam belt change - I believe VW have now changed their recommendation to 120,000miles or 4yrs whichever comes soonest.

VW removed the time element a year or so, which brought it in line with the rest of europe. Have they re introduced it ?

No, it's not every 4 years anymore, it's 140K miles and no time limit.

Would you say that applies to new vans only (manufactured since the change came into place for UK)? Have the belts or anything changed for them to change the advice or have they just changed their minds?!

Mine has done 17,000 since the last change and just gone over 4 years... so under the old advice it should be changed, but not under the new advice.

Very confused

No, it applies to all Transporter T6's regardless of age. Your's doesn't need doing according to VW policy.
Edit - you could E Mail your nearest VW Van centre for peace of mind if you wanted and if you have a warranty that you need to protect.

8 years and 70K miles in on the original belt and water pump.
As posted before the switched, shrouded type water pump is the weak point, once it seizes the belt teeth are stripped off.
I don’t have the shrouded pump

I got mine done last month, van is 7 yrs old with 50k on. I got it for peace of mind really.

Thanks Dave. I've decided to wait another year and perhaps do it next year for peace of mind!
