Bi Turbo lag bordering on dangerous.

I have a 2016 Bi turbo DSG and the lag on take off is bordering on dangerous.
There is no Regen (whatever that is from previous thread) it hasnt been mapped - as far as i know.
But pulling away nothing happens for the 1st few seconds till it gets to about 1000 rpm then all hell breaks loose :) it just that initial take off when you need to pull out of a junction quickly, i might have my foot planted to the mat but its just gutless i swear i could pull away quicker on my push bike....

is this normal or something not quite right?

Can't say I have noticed that but on other side if you need to get out so quickly then prob best to wait for next gap.

Try Sports mode and see if that improves things.

There can be electronic lag in the gearbox and the throttle pedal. The gearbox can be remapped and you can buy a 'pedal box' to sharpen up throttle response.

Dull as this seems tho', you might be giving it too much throttle. Hard acceleration with the wheels turned will cause the ESP to cut the throttle.

Is that the 180 bi-turbo? If so my father in laws is like that, you need a dsg remap as above.

That's exactly what mine was like before i got the TVS DSG map, and all is now resolved.

Great info above,...

But also have you tried in a straight line?

The "fly by wire" system on the van will limit the power delivery when the steering wheel and van are at an angle other than straight ahead. The traction control, abs, yaw rate, slew rate, direction input and pedal input are considered. Ie coming out of a corner or off a roundabout the system will limit the power until the van is more stable then let go.

More noticeable on the 204 199 biturbo DSG.

And totally agree that the DSG take up take some driving time to get used too.

Thanks for above, its really any position of steering wheel and ESP light does come on occasionally but that's when the turbo has caught up after a few seconds and all the power comes in.
I Am in NZ so will have to ask around a bit here as to possible gearbox re-map.

I would try and drive another similar van to see if you experience the same.

As others have said that DSG gearbox can do weird things, for me it's particularly when you're approaching a large roundabout for example and it won't promptly accelerate from a rolling start. However my box does shift down quickly, not a matter of seconds. it's an inconvenience more of them being dangerous if that makes sense.

From a standing start with wheels pointing in in a straight line and a full application of throttle it just takes off. I do have a 4mo which helps.

Hope that helps

My van is a TSI with DSG so same box, had the TVS DSG stage 1 map last week and it improves things (including the problem you are experiencing) massively. I'm yet to see anyone say the map wasn't worth it. Give it a go, it will be money we'll spent.

As said, many others have reported this behaviour and the TVS DSG remap apparently resolves it (and other improvements). I do wonder if VW eventually managed to resolve it themselves though, as I've never experienced it on my 2019 204 4motion.

I know this is an old thread but I’m guessing new entries might still get looked at(?)

I was massively reassured reading this thread back in April when I bought my 2019 Caravelle 199. I didn’t notice anything untoward on what was admittedly a very brief test drive as I was a bit overexcited at the chance of getting one. The garage (a very good Skoda main dealer) were happy to do the cambelt/water pump and DSG services I’d read so much about online.

Getting the van home I really noticed what I thought was mega turbo-lag getting out of junctions and onto roundabouts: car coming is miles away; press accelerator; nothing happens, so press a bit harder; oooh it’s a bit close now so I’ll lift off and take the next gap oh shit I can’t as the van is launching into the road.

As @Epic-Rob said in the original post, it’s borderline dangerous; I’ve been stuck on one roundabout in the middle of a will it / won’t it throttle response. If anyone knows Newcastle, the Blue House Roundabout is a bloody nightmare. Car parks on any form of slope also make you look like a right muppet trying to get moving.

It’s been back into the Skoda dealer who have a former VW Commercial technician there; he came out with me while I explained the situation and demonstrated the lag, even as I’m better at driving around it now. He acknowledged the lag but said it was probably within limits, and after the service manager drove it they said it was within limits. The only proposal they had was sending it back to VW who could reset the computers which apparently learned how the original owner drove (I’m guessing like a psychopath, or on roads where no-one ever goes) and reteach the computers by driving it up to 120 miles, with the proviso it may have absolutely no impact.

I can only push back so far as I have PTSD and get very anxious with complaints or this type of thing.

It seems like it’s not an uncommon problem given the mentions in this forum and when you speak to other garages. I’ve spoken to Swift Engineering in Newcastle who were recommended on here and seem brilliant; they immediately knew what I was talking about and recommended a remap of engine and DSG with Pendle Performance. Speaking to HR Auto Specialists, my local Pendle agent, they’ve just done an S4 Audi with the exact same problem.

Despite this costing nearly 650 quid I’m happy to do it to make the van safer, but I’m now into the realms of having to get specialist insurance because of the modification, and the only options on the specialist insurance websites is to say the van is chipped, which it isn’t going to be, it’s going to be remapped, to make it safer. It’s bonkers, and it’s driving me mad!

Has anyone else gone through this process and got any advice?

Thank you,

James and Bonsly

Chill out and wait for a bigger gap in the traffic. It is what it is… a big lump of van not a sports car.
Canny funny, but in Newcastle I'd be waiting all day, I'm not kidding, I already get beeped at waiting for a suitable gap

The bonkers bit is the trickle of issues like the insurance that's driving me mad

It might be worth exploring the reset. Not on the Caravelle but I had similar done by a Volvo specialist on the XC70 gearbox at about 180K when it started shifting very badly on takeoff and stopping.

I have to say the experience wasn't for the faint hearted as the box shifted like a crazy person for about 200 miles but after that crashing and banging like a vintage tractor driven by a 10 year old it settled down and by 2 weeks it was as back to normal as an autobox with 180k of use can be (now on 245k).

Thank you for that, both for the advice and for making me laugh out loud at the reference to a 10 year old driving a tractor!

It was flipping scary, thought the drivetrain would end up on the road or join me in the cabin.

I can see why as a dealer thing they apparently schedule time to give a couple of hours shakedown drive before handing it back, being a little specialist all I got was "It'll be a bit rough mate, take it easy"

A-Plan charged me an extra £30 when I declared my Revo engine and TVS gearbox map to them.

No hesitation at all in the last 3 years since I’ve had them both done.

Thanks mate that’s really helpful and a lot less daunting. I’ll call them in the morning. Fingers crossed. I'm really grateful for that
