204ps CXEB engine precaution and preventive maintenance ideas.

I've been hankering after a T6 for many years now, second hand prices for the 204ps 2016-2019 vans are finally within my reach (barely).

However, I am still very worried about these sensitive engines with so many scare stories online.

I would like to know what preventative repairs I can do to avoid engine failure?

My thoughts are;

Is a recon motor with updated cylinders the only solution or will deactivating the "stop start", an new updated AGR and yearly oil service be sufficient?

I've put all my eggs in one basket and had the EGR deleted and blanked off as the way of preventing disaster.
Also, I do an oil change in between services, so always around 6 or 7k, never more than 7K, in the 40.000 miles that I've done in it.

Engine bore wear seems to pop up around the 80k miles mark. Irispective if age.

Not sure on the turbo side of things... But seems to be the 100-150k mile range.

EGR, turbo and DPF according to VW isn't a contribution to bore wear, that's block and piston related. As they are not replaced in under the TPI. (The DPF is replaced from conciquencial damage from burning oil, not a original cause of the problem)

And as a side note over temperature has never been a problem with my van.... The oil temp metric (that I normally keep on the MFD) never goes over 105c.

Are the newer (2023 onwards) 204s OK?
Yes.

Completely different engine..in the T6.1s (DM something something)

And the original CXEB engine was revised in 2019 apparently. To fix the problem.

Looks like only 2016-2019 date range 204ps CXEB engine

Ok thanks, good news as I am looking at a 23 plate so should be good.

Out of curiosity where does one get the engine code ?

Do we know what internal engine updates were done in 2019 to solve the problem before the t6.1 revision? I would assume these are done to exchange engines. I‘ve not seen them listed anywhere.

Look on your V5 document (the prefix of the engine number). I think it’s also stamped on the engine block near where the transmission joins but you may have difficulties reading it as it’s hidden by auxiliary components.

When I bought mine 3yrs ago there were hardly any articles about the CXEB being problematic, only about the 180 biturbos and their egr cooler problems...

I'd still be worried with the 6.1 biturbo engines that at some point new problems might arise!
