VW Stealership - New Top Mounts at 17K miles!!

OK so here's the short of it - T6.1 DSG 22 plate. 17k miles. Koni Shocks and Evoteck Springs added c/o CRS when van had less than 100 miles on the clock. Lowered 50mm. Running 19 inch Brocks on 245/45/19 Uniroyals.
Been very happy with the ride etc.

Developed a bit of a clunk/snap/crackle and pop when steering stationary or very low speed.

I assumed it was coming from the OS Top Mount, possibly Drop Links - but at only 17k miles... Surely not??

I took it to the VW Stealership as its still under warranty but they immediately rejected even looking at it as a warranty because of the Konis, springs and lowering.

Now - that pis*ed me off no end but I bit my tongue and paid £130 for a 'non-warrenty' inspection. After (supposedly) having another look at it, the 'engineer' confirmed that the OS Top mount probably needs replacing (thank you Sherlock).
But again this would NOT be done under warranty because of the associated Aftermarket parts

Furthermore the engineer advised that it was in fact BECAUSE of the Koni shocks, the Springs and the lowering that the Top Mounts are now knackered!

Now... This much puzzles me.

Despite VWs dodgy approach to literally everything... the fact remains that the Top Mount probably does need swapping. But at 17k miles.... that seems mighty early in my mind?

So my question is this...

Would lowering the vehicle and adding aftermarket suspension feasibly add so much strain on the top mounts (or similar) that they'd need replacing this early on? Has anyone experienced anything like this?

I've since rescued the van from my local Stealership having not replaced anything. I've had enough with them. They are FOREVER using my aftermarket modifications as reasons to charge me through the nose and I simply don't trust them anymore.

I've since spoken to a gentleman of an engineer at a local family run VW Specialist who's going to have a look at it for me in a couple of weeks.

It’s known that the T6.1 top mounts are prone to premature failure. CRS told me they are not a beefy as previous models! Another cost saving exercise? I would go to a decent independent who should be able to identify the issue.

Talking of stealerships I recently had an issue with an electric sliding door sticking. It was booked in weeks ahead. I received a phone call to say they couldn’t work on it because the door panel had been covered in a lovely carpet type material and that voided the warranty.
Complete and utter jokers. I rectified the issue myself by removing the outer metal cover and giving everything a good clean and lube.
I have no confidence in anything they do - always trying to sell you something that you don’t really!

Bloody hell!

What absolute clowns are they running these places!? I had a similar experience with a leaking seal on a sliding side door not long ago. They said because it had a Van shade pod in it it's invalidated the warranty!! Raised a stink about that and they changed their minds out of "Good Will" hahaha.

Interesting to hear that the Top Mounts are perhaps prone to premature failure. Do you think the aftermarket suspension kit would add to it?

I would go down and argue the toss with the stealer about the Top Mounts.. But I don't think it's worth the brain damage for the 'quality of service'

I'll definitely jettison the Stealer moving forward.

When CRS did my suspension they showed me the original top mounts which were full of cracks and would definitely fail soon so I went for new ones at the same time the work was been done. I had full H and R on my T32 5.1 they needed replacing after 68k miles which was acceptable

Same thing happened to me Bilstein b14s and top mount failed driver side 9000k on clock .ovius not made like they used to .

When CRS changed my suspension on my 2020 T6.1 45k, my top mount on the offside were cracked and would fail at so point, so opted to get both swapped out at the same time. The new replacements looked much more robust in my opinion.

4 week lead time to get work done in my local dealership. Didn't reply to massages left with receptionist. Never return calls. I finally went in as that was the only way to speak to them. I have an engine warning light on. They told me if it flashes or go red call the breakdown service. I've had to VW's for years. Not the same now.

I’ve said this before. It needs a Panorama type documentary type programme to highlight the completely useless after sales service of UK franchised car/van dealerships. I’ve had it with them all. The last warranty work I had done took over 4 months to get booked in and on then on the day I was told the part was on back order!! I said hang in I’ll just call TPS and found out they had plenty stock but the dealer said they could not fit warranty parts not supplied directly from VW UK parts centre. I was not having any of that and went and got the part which they reluctantly fitted. I could go on and on………

How much were the top mounts?, I’m at crs this weekend for some work done.

The latest revision of the T6.1mount ( introduced october . november last year ) looks more substantial than its previous part

Too early to say if it will last longer however but i sincerely hope it does as i have just had £6000.00 worth of them delivered he eh

I think they were about £26 each. Did look alot more substantial than the OEM originals. Enjoy the transformation at the weekend.

Cardiff - the offending VW is Sinclair Volkswagen.

Purley out of morbid interest I asked them on Monday to quote me for the Top Mounts (not that I'm going to let them anywhere near my van again) - I still hadn't heard anything from them this morning, so I called them.

They told me that someone will call me sometime next week to discuss :slow rofl:
