Van Road Tax

It's probably been asked before but if you change a van into a Kombi/car type does the road tax change?

As far as I know the vehicle is taxed as it was first registered.

Dunno about a Kombi, but if you convert to a camper the tax stays the same.

Going to convert a van fir the wife into a car/mums taxi and know I can contact DVLAlater and change the spec from van to car(?) usage. This also means we can travel at 70mph on the motorway as well.

A PV/Kombi can already do 70mph on motorways - restricted to 60 on dual carriageways and 50 on single carriageway roads though.

If you convert to a “Motor Caravan” then this increases to 70 on dual carriageways and 60 on single, I.e. same as a passenger car. Not sure there is a route for achieving similar converting to a “car”???

Quite a bit of info here:- Kombi speed limit ?

What is the difference between a kombi and a car?
We will be using it as a car, virtually a family people carrier, with 6 seats at the most, the rear will be timmed and carpeted and even possibly a parcel shelf. Could we change the specification on the log book to a car?

Can’t remember the original classification of our kombi ( now changed to motorcaravan). Classifications can be changed but tax remains the same as its first registration however you would need to have the V5 altered to reflect number of seats etc though if you converted it.
