I fitted a towbar with pf Jones electrics I was wondering what coding I need to do. I have vcds

In ECU you need to enable Towbar in longcoding the bit is labeled in VCDS.
In Can Gateway you probably need to enable the Towbar Controller in installation list.
I think that's it.

I’ve got a quote from VW @£102 for programming the ECU to inform it that it could be towing ‘something’. (I’ve fitted a Westfalia towbar).

The light et al work, so what exactly changes within the ECU?

Secondly is it worth investing on a programmer and doing this myself? Will I re-use it??

Thanks
Ollie.

You might get a cheaper quote from a towbar installer. The only difference I can see is that when you select reverse, the media unit display shows a picture of a trailer, not the reversing sensor usual display.

It’s not the ECU your programming specifically it’s the van as a whole so all systems know that you have a towbar fitted
You have fitted a new module so this needs to be added to the can gateway installation list, this tells the van it is present and allows it to communicate with other modules, then the appropriate coding allows the van to react as it should when a trailer is attached ie disable rear parking sensors, extend alarm to rear tow electric socket, move rear fog light to trailer etc

old thread but you also get a different esp stability program. you will notice that without trailer connected the ABS and ESP lights go out together on ignition, with trailer connected the ESP stays on for 2 seconds longer than ABS.

Ok. Looks like I need to invest as I turned the ignition on with the airbag disconnected

Sorry to hijack the thread slightly but is there a switched 12v live amongst the trailer prep loom? My van has factory prep/towbar and I’m trying to pick up a 12v live and reversing signal for a camera. i can use the reversing light feed from the light cluster but it will be neater to use one on the trailer prep. 12v live there will save another cable run and fuse box fettling. Having some trouble with the current flow diagrams so any assistance very much appreciated.

Hi
I put the 13 pin socket on mine, already have a camera and definitely had a permanent live in my loom

Pin 10 in the 13 pin socket is an ignition switched live. It’s intended for running a fridge in a towed caravan. I have factory towing electrics & pin 10 hadn’t been activated. I activated it with VCDS.

Thanks a lot for the replies. I’ve taken 13pin socket apart to confirm the wires in the loom are standard and to confirm the outputs before I splice in. Had a fun time with a meter, only pin 9, permanent live gives 12v through its associated earth or body earth, lighting pins were not energised despite the lights being on. Wondering if the module only allows power to the other pins if a trailer is detected. Was hoping to use the pin 10(fridge)switched live and pin 8 reverse signal to run the camera. That won’t work unless they are active with no trailer sensed. May be my dodgy meter skills at play, I’ll have a look on VCDS and see if I can activate pin 10. I really appreciate folks taking the time to reply, great community and forums.
Cheers

Thanks for the info. Might just stop struggling, run the cable to the dash fuse box and take the reverse signal from the rear light cluster. I grew up on Mk1 escorts and Capris, this is far too clever for me.

Did you have the engine running when you did your testing?
