Insurance Companies

My son used a comparison site to get a quote for car insurance, then added me as a named driver, price went down, then added his mum as a second named driver, went down again !!!

I've had the same happen with my three daughters cars, it's handy for me because I do all the maintenance on them anyway.
Perhaps young drivers are more careful if Mum and Dad also use their cars sometimes?

Some advice please. Should have done more homework, but in the end after 1.5hours of filling in online forms as looking at the wrong insurance type, in order to get insurance to pick up van went with Admiral. Was reassured by the “right” boxes on the mods options when quoting. However, reading all the policy docs in detail - said I was a geek - see intro post - if the worst happens no manufacturer mods not covered. Only 4 days in. Do I requote with a few of the specialist providers and take the hit on cancellation fee for piece of mind? My gut feeling is yes. Thanks in advance!!!

I stuck with Sterling for a couple of years as they were the cheapest initially, then close enough come the first renewal. Admittedly, after I forgot about the 28 day thing...
This year, they wanted £550, up from around £500 last year which is £300 more than the cheapest on the comparison sites!!
In the end, I went with Adrian Flux as it was the cheapest company that I had actually heard of, and I've used them in the past.

£350 fully comp with mods declared (including lowered 70mm, which can be tricky to cover), but only 5000 miles per annum.

My experience says either this is no longer ‘a thing’ or the insurers just bump up prices for anyone applying 28 days in advance.

I got quotes in that golden advance notice period, forgot to accept any and actually paid a fistful of pennies less by getting fresh quotes on the day my policy had expired.

I agree. Last year it was definitely a thing and my idelness cost me.
This year, all the comparison site quotes looked identical with 7 days to go as they did at 28.

third year running with Caravan Guard. Market value policy with mileage increased from 8 to 12k and £450 excess. Comes out at £465 annually

its a shame my Ghost Immobiliser is not recognised and is unlikely to be so in the near future.

Just renewed mine with CG. It increased slightly from last year as I’ve now protected 5 years NCD. No other company came close. Odd that they won’t give a discount for a Ghost but give one for my Stoplock Pro 🤷‍♂️

The only downside for me is they’ll only cover work done by an approved company (even crap ones like the converter who did mine) but won’t allow DIY mods or even let me remove the fixed cooker as they won’t class it as a camper van without fixed cooking. I can live with that due to the much cheaper cost

The Ghost doesn't qualify for discounts because it lacks Thatcham-certification and it lacks certification because its CAN-Bus technology doesn't meet the certification criteria used (and understood) by Thatcham.

It's analagous to asking a firearms expert to assess a laser-blaster - they're simply not qualified to do so.

I appreciate that's not a satisfactory answer, but it is the answer.

some of the work on my Rico Revolution conversion was dubious. Believe they no longer operate.

I'm having a wild time trying to get insurance quotes at the moment. Part of the issue is that I've had 2 claims in a work vehicle on work insurance in close proximity in 2024.
I'm looking at buying a van currently and having a day van conversion inside...... total cost about £45K
Admiral - disclosed the accidents to - £900
Sterling - Dislcosed the accidents to, they said they wouldn't count them - £850
Just Kampers - Disclosed accidents to - £1300
Adrian Flux - Initially enquired with business use on, £1400, asked them to take business use off - refused to as I'd declared business use (even though I said I'd use a different vehicle)

Refused to quote: Brentacre, Howdens.

Why is it this overly complicated?

Like everything in the UK, it’s a scam.

Companies are just raising prices systematically and changing the goalposts to see what they can get away with. The result is well over 1 million uninsured drivers on the road and someone being hit by an uninsured or hit and run driver every 20 minutes. Also, over 1.3 million people have been given a driving license without taking a test and 800,000 have never taken a test.
Then guess what happens? We all have to pay more money.

This is why the government set up the Motor Insurance Taskforce because the facts are now being exposed.
