H7 Headlamp - Changing DRL Bulb

Thank you again for all info. I will have another go over weekend.

Thanks Paul

got a bulb out warning today and the passenger side Drl is blown, couple of questions:

1) Can these be replaced in situ or is it a bumper off job?

2) Are there any led options or “whiter bulbs” I can replace with?, hating the 80s french Citroen look!

Royal pain in the hoop to get then out, but they do come without dismantling the front. Be aware of a potential issue with them though. See link below. Maybe best not to put LEDs in until your warranty expires. Also, just for info, LEDs wont be e marked for use with the reflector in the headlamp.

They changed these on the MY19 models. Up until this date, you'd pull the bulb holder and bulb completely out. The wiring connections are on the female part of the headlight that the bulb holder fixed into. The newer ones have wiring to the back of the bulb holder, meaning you can't completely remove it to make fitting the bulb easier. Then, because you can't see what you are doing, the piece that you twist and pull comes away and takes some working out with limited space how the hell it goes back together.

I've just fitted LEDs in mine as a stop gap before the THQ headlights arrive. The white lights look sooooooooo much better. Just make sure you get CAN BUS ones, otherwise you'll have the bulb out warning light on the dash.

Just changed my H7 drls to the Osram premium, removed the air box for much improved access and the battery and tray for the other side, very easy to do..

Thanks chaps, I’ve ordered some of the above so will have a crack over the weekend

Afternoon boys n girls.

I would like to changed the the bulbs in my H7 lights.

Now with a few broken figures or removing the airbox and battery I think I could manage the main H7 bulbs BUT I mainly would like to change the DRL bulbs and looks like the headlights may need to come out unless I'm missing something which as I've said before if a real possibility. Can anyone help me

I did have a search and I tried Google but mainly I get h4 results.

Kind regards
Charlie.
Literally just changed mine this afternoon, the main headlights were hard especially the drivers side as there’s hardly any gap, there’s a good 5 min video clip on YouTube which helped me lots... took about 45 mins to do all bulbs, one tip when doing sidelights with leds, put the bulb in holder then check if they work before putting them in the headlights slot, I managed to put them in upside down twice!!!!! They simply didn’t work if In the wrong way!

Here is the video link.

This how the tool looks when it's clicked onto the holder.

hi @Dieseldonkey, thank you for the pictures - really helped! Though to change one bulb took about 3hrs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯

the problem I faced is that while
Trying to install the light with led bulb back, I’ve lost the washer highlighted in red... would you have any suggestions how and where to buy a spare one please?

many thanks and regards,

I’ve just swapped my DRLs and one side has a tool clipped to the bulb and the other side doesnt. Are they available separately or do you just get one?

@Dieseldonkey @Paynewright @tollaut - Guys I cc you in as you may have be interested. I expect DDonkey .... just wishes I would go away!!!
On the DRL's, so far I have had it changed twice....and the Driver's side only ever lasts 3 months! I must admit I gave up and the my local garage who specialise in Vdubs says they are a pain in the arse! They have taken the bumper off to ease access! He's really good and I am tempted to find another solution e.g. could you fool warning light on the dashbaord with a resistor? I am just fed up with it - fi anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know.

On my Skoda you could turn the drls off - think its ign on and hold one of the stalks up for 3 seconds. It’ll be in the manual I’m sure!

I'm pretty sure that new car models before 2011 could be turned off that way, but any new model after 2011 are not switchable without external software such as VCDS.

I recently bought a pair of H7's (not fitted them yet)
On both of my drl's the long plastic part is attached to the bulb holder - not a separate tool
Not sure if it's a later model?

Mine are recent purchases - I think one has been broken as there were shards of plastic I managed to shake out of the headlight. No big deal.

Just wonder if they are available to buy separately.

Thanks for confirming there should be two.

They changed them on 2019 models as a fix for the melting bulb holders. The original ones had power going to the hole in the headlight, then when the bulb holder was fitted, it completed the circuit. The 'fixed' version have wires going to the bulb holder / tool thing.

Hey, I installed my Philips X-tremeUltinon gen2 LED H7 (Twin) - THEY’re AMAZING BTW!!! Highly tecommend... back to the subject - theae weren’t canbus ready and the guy who helped me to install them helped me to delete the bulb error on the dashboard so it can be done.
However if you connect the Carista or VCDS, you will still see errors there (like below) but they can be disabled on the dashboard by disabling bulb fault monitoring issue ( you’ll generally know when and which bulb is gone )

ALSO, Consider changing bulbs to Philips Ultinon - you won’t regret - I’ve changed all my bulbs on my H7 to these bulbs.

I think you need a dedicated holder for each DRL bulb... I’ll try searching for the exact VW part number and see if can buy these from VW directly

Yes, checked the stickers on mine - they're both late 2019 so are the updated version

Yes. You can buy the bulb holder as a separate part. TPS sold them but I think they may now be trade only. Otherwise its a dealer part.

Worth having a read of threads in post 2 above, if you have H7 headlights and are swapping your DRL bulbs. Keep an eye out for melting contacts. Consider a warranty claim to get the headlight units swapped for the new hard wired design. Yet another safetry related issue VW should be recalling vehicles for, to get fixed.
