Germany and Black Forest

Taking the van on another road trip in September. Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry and then down to Black Forest. Does anyone have any recommendations, places to see on that route? I’ve no firm plans yet other than the ferry!

We’ve just camped for a week in Assen 2 hours north of Amsterdam and then a week in the northern Black Forest.

Spend at least a day if not more around Amsterdam, it is such a lovely city. Forget the cliche sex and pot stuff, there is so much to see and do there. We parked in the old Olympic stadium, 2.6m clearance so good for a T6 loads with bikes (which ours always is), very safe. It’s a 20 min easy tram ride from the centre through a beautiful part of the city off the tourist track.

The Black Forest is beautiful but it was not quite what I was expecting having spent the last few years camping in Dordogne. It is lovely but with regular reminders of German utilitarian stuff. Locals were mostly very friendly but we received some low levels of hostility each day. The lack of UK and French cars is notable. If you need a fix of non German then slip across to Strasbourg for a full day, it is a truly beautiful city.

Find a Rodalbahn, they are excellent fun. Cheap and a great day out.

We did the treetop walk at the top of the Sommerbergbahn outside Bad Wildbad. That treetop walkway gives you a real sense of how enormous the Black Forest is. Well worth doing as well as the wobbly suspension bridge. Look it up.

We did Sommerrodelbahm Gutach if you are looking for details.

You will hear of Triberg, it’s ok but a bit of a chintzy version of a Black Forest town. If you want to see an attractive Black Forest city then Freiburg is lovely, particularly the Altstadt (old town) area.

We were in Germany last month for three weeks. For the Black Forest start with Route 500 south from Baden-Baden, one of the most scenic routes and a fantastic drive.
Can recommend Welcome - Natur-Camping Langenwald great camp site in Northern Black Forest with cycle trails and walks into the local towns and forests, and a great base to explore from.

We drove down from Yorkshire and Le Shuttle with our first night in Ypres. Then onto Luxembourg, a couple days along the Mosel, three nights in Koblenz, then down to Heidelberg for a couple of nights, Black Forest, see above. Then Stuttgart (Porsche museum), then headed back up the Rhein, Nurburgring, Eiffel Natural Park, and then back to Calais.

Total of 24 nights, and only scraped the surface.

We stayed at Lynx Camp in Schönwald im Schwarzwald. The campsite was nice and chilled, there are some walks from the site but it’s more based near a little town. So maybe not the most scenic Black Forest site depending on what you’re after. There are photos and details from our stay here:
We walked to the Triberger waterfall, Triberg was lovely! Lots more there.

Bühlhof in Schönwald is a beautiful cuckoo clock shop.
