Also as you’ve left the system open you’ll need to have it on the vacuum stage a long time to hopefully get moisture out the system, you can do a system flush btw but make sure you put the right amount of oil in, if you just replace the condenser you’ll have to put the oil retrieved and extra in which is an educated guess no strict science to it
 
My limited experience with ships AC systems is that work arounds generally cause more problems. No idea what auto AC repair standards are but with industrial it usually vacuum, purge and pressure test with dry nitrogen before replacing all gas and oil, measured (gas weighed).
I’d be taking my van to an AC specialist I think.
 
If you suspect leak yes nitrogen pressure testing with cars, these compressors have a variable wobble plate inside
I would insist on a long vacuum to aid drying first
