Oil radiator installation. Possible troubleshooting solutions?

So this week I had some maintenance work done on the van, DSG oil service, Engine oiil service, 340mm brakes and oil cooler fitted.

I had a nice hour long drive home and where the oil normally is between 100 and 105 c without towing..... the temp just reached 95 c with some spirited driving (as far as that's possible with a van) with an outside temperature of 22c

I am a happy with the result regarding the 92c thermostat i used..
also the cooler itself is placed on the drivers-side next to the VW logo, nicely in sight behind the grill

BTW how do I post pics on this forum?
When you start typing your post, just below and to the left side there is an ‘Attach files’ button with a paper clip icon.
Click that and choose from your ‘Photo Library’, ‘Take Photo’ or ‘Choose Files’. Choose a photo etc and click ‘Add’.
Done

‘Cool’ that it works. ☺️ I do think a 102c stat (or higher) would be better tbo. With an outside temp of 22c + some spirited driving, 95c is on the cool side imo. The normal 100 - 105c range is perfect. Ideally you’d want the cooler to work when the oil temp goes towards 115c and up.

Does it take the engine longer to warm up now? (something you definitely don’t want)

No, the engine warms up just like normal.

Regarding the oil temp: When I drive my BMW or my mate's RS3 the normal operating temps are around 95 degrees so i guess that's in the safe range, in essence i fitted the oil cooler for towing my caravan in summer so it will absolutely be 20 degrees higher in that case..

Just driven 500+ miles to and from Cornwall this weekend. I would say my 80d swp, which I am fully aware is not the right temp, is definely overcooling up to 100d. I fact you really have to go mad to get it to 100d now. Cooler is defo working where it is. 102 swp will be interesting when I get it

Agreed, 80 C is just too cold.

Good Morning comrades

So I get the van running last night 🥳
I need to carry out the VCDS bleeding process this morning then get it run up to temperature, and eventually a few short drives.

I’ll also set the oil pressure to the new engine setting (4 Bar) to ensure there are no leaks before I put the bumper back on

I completely underestimated how much more oil it would take to fill with the additional pipework, I think it took about 3L, which is didn’t realise til it had been running for a few minutes after checking the dip stick.

Once its had a few short drives, it’ll be getting an engine and DSG oil service to be sure there’s no muck left in the system from cutting the pipes, I blew the out with an airline before fitting but there will still be traces of it on there.

Oil take off plate with the front boss milled off completely, and the rear milled down to the height of the front one, 5mm

Pipework from the thermostat fitted to the side of the battery compartment.

Rads back on and cooler offered up into its position.
Note the splash guard to the left has been cut out carefully to allow the 150 degrees elbow to fit nicely

Right hand side cooler take off almost inline with the remote thermostat

Pipework completed and fitted to check clearances.

See how the top thermostat outlet is almost strait, ideally I think this would take a 30 degrees elbow, but I’m being impatient so went ahead and made the pipe up.
I fitted the heat shrink abrasion resistant sleaving to the two pipes to and from the cooler, the rears didn’t need it.

All torqued up and ready to fit the expansion vessel and fire her up for the first time in 2 months 😅

It’s taken some doing!!
Main issue was the oil take off plate, the only one that fits was a MK7 MQB platform item from Darkside, but that caused further clearance issues, I found an engine builder locally who machined the bosses down to accept the banjo swivels and clear the hard plastic engine coolant intakes, then it’s been an endless supply of parts from HEL performance and delivery times.

There is a slight whine, but from my understanding this is fairly common and goes away completely once warm.

With running it up to temp on the drive, I’ve found that the oil warms up much quicker, it actually pulls the coolant up quicker too, it’s only been on tick over so no real tests just yet, it’s just had the DSG oil and filter changed, and today it’s getting its Haldex oil changed, going to remover the pump to clean the filter too, some of the photos of the filters I've seen are terrible!

I’m almost done, I get the bumper on yesterday, but found that I had fitted it incorrectly last night, Doh!
So that’s on today list of things to do, I also have a screen wash leak to sort.

This week I had a fairly long trip (no towing)) with 28 to 30 degrees ambient temps outside where the oil would normally reach 120c easily, now it did reach 100c for a very short time but most of the time it was 97c.

I assume that when i'm towing my caravan this summer oil temp will not exceed 120c but i'll report back when we are on holiday.

I think I'll be just fine this summer
