4motion-ing the roads less travelled...

So, been a bit quiet on the van-idge front, but back on it!

Been umm-ing and possibly even rrr-ing over some additional front lighting. A big led light bar on the roofrack? (very 'overland', bit of a faff)...lazers in the front grill? (great reviews, but too obvious), just some better headlights? (flashy, no pun, expensive, and even more obvious!) And then I found these...(wtf)

So got them ordered and fitted as, in true FD style, as per this short video...

Will do more of a review soon, but early feedback...excellent, high quality, easy to fit and bright enough to light the deepest crevises of a serial killer's soul!

Well, after the posting drought, we seem to have a bit of a drizzle. This time, as many as one of you, may have been wondering about the latest state my storage solutions. So if that was you here we are...

Storage is now done. Just finished the mega drawer in the back. The Titan bed allows so much storage underneath...so much so that when loaded with loads of kit, it can be a problem getting stuff in and out. I've had my front locker for a while and have no added the mega-drawer at the back. Sacrificing a bit if space for the convenience of being able to access everything, anytime regardless of the rest of the load out.

And yes, of course, there is another video summarising the finalise, complete solution...

Hi there forum fans,

I have literally been inundated with almost 1 request for a new "adventure" video. So just before Christmas I headed off into the Shropshire wilderness with the Failthful Donkey and my smallest offspring in his faithful little Panda 4x4 to splosh around in some mud, rip shreds of paint off the side of the van on shrubbery and cook a burger with a view of nothing but fog and dank. Can't beat it :-)

Hope you all had a great Christmas and received plenty of new van gadge...

I'm still massively envious of your 4Motion.

Having driven XC70s for nearly 2 decades I wish we could have found a Caravelle with 4Motion, but they're hard to find.

...a Caravelle would probably have been my first choice too - but ended up prioritizing 4Mo and diff lock over everything else and its all worked out pretty well. Funnily enough, my Father in law had a couple of XC70s over the years that I was always envious of! Must be some weird link between the two :).

Forgot to post a quick update on my Stealth LED lights. Whilst they work great, using the remote control was a bit of a pain, so finally got around to fitting the switch that came with it. Actually, I only used the really high quality cabling that was included, and swapped the switch for one that fitted in one of the many 'blanks' in the dashboard. for a more OEM look. Here's a link to the Ebay store where I got the switch from...great item...EBay T6 dashboard switch

Really pleased with the results. ...

and, you guessed it, another video on the off chance someone cares

Ouch, the price of the switch is a bit steep but the result is definitely worth it.

I want to make something similar, could you post a link to the rails you used please?

Yeah, the price was more than maybe I expected, but so glad I made the choice and reckon it is value for money in the end. And the chap that makes them was a great guy - he asked me for some install photos which I sent - plus the video that I have now posted on YouTube - he was very happy and sent me another switch for free to thank me, which was very nice of him :)
The only down-side is that the light only light ups when it is 'on', and not background illuminated when the headlights are on...so its dark at night. Not a biggie as its really easy to find and, I guess putting in the extra illumination would be a lot more complex and expensive!

According to VW the wading depth of an unmodified T6/T6.1 Transporter is just 30cm (12”) which can be taken at a maximum speed of 30kph. This is based on the lowest points for water and dust entry namely the drive train components (gearbox, Haldex and rear diff). If you’ve a camper conversion then other components need to be protected from flooding such as an underfloor diesel heater and not forgetting that water can also get into the interior space through gas drop outs and various through-floor fixings.

Fitting an extended breather kit would certainly be a smart move and ensuring all through floor holes are fully sealed.

So what to do on damp and dreary January Sundays? Maybe time to sort some of those things that have been lingering around for months. Lets get mounting...

CO monitor, previously dangling willy nilly on a hook
1000001273.webp
Tablet mount, previosly just stood it on the fridge which meant getting movie beers out a faff
1000001275.webp1000001276.webp
And a hall based battery monitor thingymajig...
1000001277.webp

Running out of things to do now, but there will always be one more thing.

Have you used the diff lock much? has it ever been needed, got you unstuck?
Not used it much but when I have makes a huge difference...its like having a get out of jail button! Is it essential? Probs not as maybe you should never take a van to a place where it is needed... you also are probs somewhere you may be damaging your shiny wonder. But if you do solo overlanding or end up going into unknown areas/roads, its very reassuring and definitely takes things to a new level.
Hope this helps!

I have been looking to upgrade my Caddy 4motion to a Transporter 4motion. I do some light off roading with the caddy, which has surprised a few people.
Trying to find the best spec transporter with a diff lock is not easy, might have to compromise.

Yeah, its a tricky thing. In the end I just decided to prioritise the diff lock as it was really the only thing spec wise that I couldnt sort aftermarket (or just live with). Maybe a DSG would have been next...but strangely, now, twin sliders is something I would not want to be without.
Anyway happy hunting and let us all know how you get on.
FD.

Agreed, I’ve used diff lock to get out of slippery fields a couple of times. I do try to avoid needing it, but was very happy when I did use it.
