Hi
Just got my van back from my engineer having prototyped and built the new rear bumper with swing away wheel carrier/fuel can and integrated winch, just a couple of minor electrical gremlins to sort. Also fitted new front grill from our sponsors ZunSport, with their special mesh behind both top and bottom grills to stop stones going through. Off to Vanworkz for bigger brakes tomorrow, glad to have my van back.

That looks brilliant - I bet you’re chuffed.

What’s the deal with the grilles - does that mesh slot in, or is it part of the actual grille itself?

Also, Baker Slots would make a great addition.

good work, i looked at making something like this, but the sensors looked like too much trouble, unless i moved them into the carrier frame.

are you having any issues?

Hi Ads Essex
We tried to integrate the mesh into the grill but couldn’t make it look right, so it’s been attached at the the back of the grill. What are Baker slots ? I am thinking of putting some vents (Ford Escort RS) in the bonnet.

Hi Bryan 23
Yes the sensors are obscured and they complain for a very short period when you start up. I am investigating ways to move them later I have too much on at the moment prepping the van. I have installed cameras front and rear to help parking.

Not sure about the bonnet vents, but T4 style vents in the wing look smart.

And the baker slots are vents in the rear quarter windows:

Ok, have heard of Baker slots before, but didn’t realise that was what they were called (don’t you loose some of the view out of your windows). Vents in the side look rather cool but don’t serve any useful purpose that I can see. The idea of the bonnet vents is to help relieve engine bay heat as we are going near the Gobi Desert. At the moment all modifications are to improve performance, looks can come later. . .

Brilliant. Love it, well done.

Have just got the pivot for the swing out tyre carrier back from engineering (Thanks Field Engineering) The tyre is so heavy that the bearing becomes a critical part and has to be engineered to much a closer tolerance. Required reaming out the original hole, cutting a brass insert to fit and act as a bearing surface, then drill out the old post and make a new one that fitted the brass bearing exactly. Required a bit of torch work to get the securing pin to line up and in doing so broke one of the securing brackets, so off to have that gas welded, all part of the fun. . .

Hi, this is just the kind of thing I'm looking for! Are these for sale? I see that this post is nearly a year old. Have all the glitches been worked through and how has it stood up to the test of time?

Chur.

Hi Chur
Well, the guy that built it has closed his workshop (people not paying their bills) As you might have seen we have been to Mongolia and hammered the living daylights out of it, eventually breaking the welds on the spare wheel carrier, then bending the whole bumper on a rock, solved by reversing the whole van into a concrete pylon to bend it back into shape. Have much better welds on it now so don’t expect any more problems. The problem now is finding someone to repeat it.
