As above, pics of either or both would be appreciated- for some reason, this place attracts people who like looking at pics of Transporters.Another newbster here.
Bit about me: just bought a year old T6.1 in Ravenna Blue. A much overdue upgrade from my eighteen-year-old T5. Truth be told, it was a reluctant upgrade and if the old girl weren’t starting to look so embarrassingly tatty then I’d have probably kept her going for a year or two more, especially as she’d just earned another years MOT three weeks before I pulled the trigger on the new (to me) T6.1.
I’d done just a smidge under 300,000 miles during those 18 years in this old T5 and in all those years there were only two occasions when I’d had to call RAC, when the old battle bus couldn’t limp its way to the garage unaided. First was an ECU when still under warranty, second, the clutch at about 220,000 miles. Still had the original exhaust all the way up to the day it was sold. The reason for my reluctance at buying a newer one was simply the feeling of almost bullet-proof, never ending reliability with the old one, even if it was starting to feel somewhat agricultural, especially compared to my new one. The growing rust patches and faded paint told me it was time andI knew I was pushing my luck towards the end and so the decision was made.
And so the T6.1 then: first thought are that it feels hugely different and it’d be churlish to say I’m not made up to be in something that drives and feels more car-like. I can’t help but wonder though if it’s going to be as agg-free as the previous 18 years of VW ownership, given the amount of complexity and things to go wrong in the new one. Second thought have obviously turned to the inevitable after-market kit. I've carpeted the rear floor and coverered the ply lining with automotive stretch and I’ve decided on black roof bars, Climair deflectors and Thoresby side bars for now. Once I’ve recovered a bit financially from the purchase then I’m thinking I may swamper it up a little with upgraded alloys and grabbers/goodrich tyre combo. Oh, and interior mood light kit, and speaker upgrades too. The more I look the more I’ll find, no doubt.
There’ll be questions for the good people on here and it seems a friendly place so I’m hoping to drop in from time to time.
All the best for now.
Welcome.Newby here down a rabbit hole reading manual when I should be in bed asleep...... Picked up Jan 22 registered Highline SWB in Ascot Grey this weekend - day van conversion no pop top but suits us with all the necessary to use year round and many kayaks to go on the roof! I'll also happily take a full width bed and reduced price tag over a fixed sink and cupboards - just as well the later out of budget. Will post pics soon. Need to take some when it is not sheeting it down with rain! Excited for all the trips to come.
I am a full on geek! I feel my bank balance is not going to thank me over the next few years!Welcome.
After nearly 3 years of ownership, i guess I really should get round to reading that damned manual. Always something better to do though.![]()
