Webasto doesn't work - Caravelle T6

Hi!

Now, it's mine Webasto on my car who doesn't work any more (few weeks ago, it was for a friend).

I have a VW Caravelle T6 since October 2016.
298 500Km today.

I use the webasto many times per day, every day during the winter, since 7 years.

I never had any problem, and I never service it or fix or change any part.


Since 2 weeks, it stop alone before the end of the timer.

This week it's VERY cold on Lapland (-30 / -38°c).
Since yesterday, the webasto doesn't want to work. It stop after few seconds (sometimes, little more).

It's smelling strong (probably the diesel not fully/well burned).

We have a specific diesel here, working under -40°c.

For OP to verify of course but I’m pretty sure it’s a water heater and most likely 5kW Thermo Top Evo - very common factory option in Finland. Scan HW and SW numbers match mine.

Most likely the cause is some grit the heater has inhaled which is jamming the blower. You do have all the bottom cowlings/fairings in place?
Could it be something as simple as sucked powdery snow which has melted and now frozen - preventing the blower to run freely??

VCDS has a test to run the combustion air blower - makes quite distinctive noise.
VCDS > Select > 18-Aux.Heat > Output tests > IDE06615-Combustion Air Blower
If it doesn't run could lightly tap the heater to try to free the blower.

I had the problem far from -40, maybe +/- -25 when it became to stop alone after a while.

It's a "French" caravelle (not a nordic version), but I made lot of modifications on the car (like insulation inside the cabin)

But few years ago I looked for the part number.

I found this : 5Q0 898 065

2 days ago, I checked on Volkswagen Transporter Kombi (2016 - 2017) - fan. auxiliary heater. > VAG ETKA Online > Nemiga.com
But I found a different part number : 7E0 963 319


Do you know how to check the good part number for my case?

Do you know if I can change, preventively, other parts ? (fan ?)

I have had to change the file extn from .rar to .txt to upload as it was too big to upload as .pdf and cannot upload .rar files - just change the extn back to .rar and unzip.

The combustion air blower is running at +/- 9500 tr/m
The glow plug seems to work.
The metering pump is going 7hz

Now I will try to look under.

I see nothing from under, the plastic cover is in place.

I started the webasto.

I feel everything is starting like normal (listening all noises).

I saw that the exhaust pipe if not stuck, I saw a lot of smoke (too much - bad ignition ?), the fan was going faster and faster, I heard "clic clic clic clic" like normal, then still lot of smoke, then no smoke anymore then the webasto stopped, the fan was going slow.

I tried to started it again 30 second after and it auto-stopped after 1 second.


I can't warmup the cabin and the engine at the same time when driving, it's too cold

I just tried again to start it.

This time, it started. It was not smoke but steam. So, good... I heard the cabin air blower working, just... 1 minute.
Then everything stopped.

It seems it stops when I open and close the door of the car !

Now it refuses to start, I have the green LED of the remote flashing : long short - long short - long short (I look now on the net what it means).

I was able to start it from inside the car, before to unlock (vcds answered "not running") then the remote worked again.
