We stayed here for the first night away in the van with the family and awning extra, probably 5 years ago now. It had an old military Nissan type tent for the facilities which was a bit weird but was actually ok. Good pub down the road and good walks to other pubs!View attachment 289860
Ah I’ve browsed that place a few times, I’m not a member of the club so never stayed there! I should really consider joining one of the clubs.

We stayed at Glebe Leisure near Bicester a few years ago. Seem to remember it was fine.

New Forest, C&MC campsite at Brockenhurst (Black Knowl). If you don't want all that luxury and expense, there's a private camping area called Aldridge Hill (I won't call it a site!) immediately adjacent to it but you'll need off grid capability, a portaloo and lots of spray deodorant. Great area for Dub dogs.

Also the C&MC campsite in Broadway in the Cotswolds.

This is another option. Now actually stayed there as it’s a bit close to me but nice walks and pub

Chipping Norton campsite, it is close to the A361, we were ok on our pitch and useful to get at the front of the queue at Diddly Squat Farm !! some great bike rides and bus stop outside site, very clean campsite

I have just spent an infruriating few hours trying to organise a trip to Edinburgh next week. We want to stay 4 nights somewhere close, where we can leave the van and use public transport to get into the city. I had all but settled on Mortonhall - there's a bus stop just outside the site apparently, with services into the city, and it looks a pretty nice site with good facilities. I was happy with £40/night incl. EHU (bit miffed that WiFi is extra, & can't actually see how much extra anywhere on their website). Having looked at everything else we want to do (castle, Royal yacht etc.) to make sure the dates all work out, I started to make a booking. Only then do I find out they want an extra £8.50 per night to put up a bit of flappy canvas next to my van 🤬 To say my p1ss is boiled is an understatement. If they had just given a rate of £48.50 per night, I might have been able to get my head around it.
The C&MH Club site unbelievably works out cheaper, but it's a long walk to the nearest bus stop. Drummohr campsite at Musselburgh is an option, but again a bit of a hike to a bus stop, although there's a free park & ride nearby - but that would mean moving the van each morning (and the hassle of detaching / re-attaching the awning etc.)

Anyone got any other suggestions or favourites? Or should we just go to Wales?

We stayed at Drummohr overnight recently on the way back down from Laggan. Missus got the train in to Edinburgh and back and then the bus from the train station to the nearest stop. 5 min walk from there, so no real hiking involved and the bus drivers were very friendly apparently as she had no idea which one to get from the station 🤣
They do have that weird no windbreak rule at Drummohr and were very bike theft conscious but they do fire pits with logs and kindling for £15 and have some great bottles of cider.

So far this summer we have stayed at Ringstead Bay Camping
2 nights it was utterly ace , super clean helpful, its a temporary site , it would be magic when the kids are back.
Hallett's at Portland Bill Camping really basic with not so nice sorta loos , however its right on the coast path the veiws are epic well worh a few nights ,oh and cheap as chips.
Bredy Farm, Burton Bradstock – Campsite, Restaurant, Cider, Live Music, Festivals always a winner if you dont go at the weekend which is f***ing nasty loud and full of entitled pricks .
Home - Heritage Coast - For Camping, Lodges, Exclusive Hire and Weddings really ace adults only site on the South Wales coast .
Award Winning Coastal Campsite on the Edge of Exmoor - South Dean Camping epic views high on the Exmore cliffs
Pembrokeshire Coast Campfire Wild Camping. Family Friendly . Dog Friendly. Wide open Skies, Star Gazing, Coastal , Sea Views pure ace we have been going since it opened Noth Pembrokeshire rules
hoping to fit a few more in during September next weekend we are Cae Du Caravan & Camping Park
always a top place for Snowdonia .
Oh I forgot Coco's Wild Camp always funny .
Were you camped this summer then ?

Someone recommended this site to me years ago, I can’t remember who or why but I still have the paper note they wrote the name on by my desk. I think they said it was easy to get into Edinburgh from the site but sounds like planes trains and automobiles!

Thanks for that. I looked on Streetview and it looks like the road from the bus stop to the site is a narrow unlit single track lane. Just wondering what that will be like coming back in the dark?

OK, I rang Mortonhall this morning and said I probably won't be using an awning or canopy, but asked what the deal is if I do decide once I'm there that I need it, and the bloke on the phone basically said no-yeah-don't worry about it, it's basically just in August when it's packed that we charge for them  We will see. Booked three nights. Planning on going to the Kelpies on the third day, so found a different site near Stirling for the 4th night. Will report back on "Where have You Been..."

We stayed at Mortonhall for a few nights at the end of May for a gig at Murrayfield...it was fully booked. Only paid for a basic pitch which was around 30quid i think...the weather was wet and windy so we used the wind out awning with sides and front and didnt have any issues, altough the marked out pitch seemd quite 'tight'!
We found it ideal for the city though with the buses running regularly from just outside the gate...perfect location. Their new shower block is how it should be done..fantastic!

OK, so having gotten over the initial shock at the pricing at Mortonhall, I'm happy to report that I would recommend the site and would stay there again if visiting Edinburgh. Having browsed booking.com and discovered that for our dates, the only remotely similar cost for overnighting would be a dorm bed in a hostel, and that even a Travelodge anywhere near Edinburgh would probably cost 10x the pitch fee, I think £40 is fair. I still think an extra £8.50 for an awning is excessive, but having seen how closely packed the pitches are in places (not sure how legal?) I suppose it's understandable. Since we were planning on being out all day anyway, and made full use of the campser's kitchen (more on that to follow) in the evenings, we didn't really need the awning anyway.

The short walk to the bus stop for regular buses into the city centre (taking approx. 30 minutes) alone make the site probably the best place to stay.

The modern toilet / shower block is excellent, very clean and spacious, certainly one of, if not the best we've seen:

The campers' kitchen in the same block is fantastic: very spacious with a lovely view of the park, and microwaves toasters and kettles available. Unfortunately you can't plug in your own appliances (like induction hobs). There are some wall sockets, but you'd need a ladder to get to them (deliberate)!

The 24/7 piped muzak in this building is slightly irritating (if I never hear Enya's Marble Halls again it will be too soon!)

More annoying, however, especially if you are a light sleeper, is the constant traffic hum at night (presumably from the Edinburgh bypass, although it must be at least a mile or two away), but being only a few miles from the city centre, this is a small price to pay I guess.

There is an older facilities building which is not as modern, but also very good. There is a smaller campers' kitchen, with electric hobs available - but at a charge of £1 for 15 minutes, which would barely be enough to boil some rice

There is no WiFi across the site, but free WiFi is available at the bar / restaurant (typical pub menu / prices).

There's a shop and games room, a BBQ hut (for hire) and probably some other stuff I've forgotten to mention, but as I said before, as a base for exploring Edinburgh, the location alone makes it ideal and it's definitely up there with the best sites we've stayed at so far. 👍

And following on from that, only fair to give shout out for Witches Craig campsite at Stirling.

OK, so it's not Edinburgh, but at £31 incl. EHU and free WiFi and a campers' kitchen where we could plug in our induction hob 😅 and only £2 extra if we wanted to put up an awning (we didn't), it seemed like very good value. A really beautiful location and very well kept site.

There's a bus stop a short walk from the entrance for services into Stirling.

The shower and toilet block is almost identical to Mortonhall, right down to the free hairdryers:

IMG_20250910_152855689_HDR.jpg

The kitchen is smallish and doesn't have much seating if the weather is cr4p, but we had it to ourselves so it was ideal. Washing up liquid is even provided:

All in all a really great little site, and for us a comfortable distance from home (Merseyside) to use as a stopover when we next are heading further north.

I need to do a practice camp with the dog next thurs 18th Sept. Any suggestions near huddersfield. Have seen a few sites but nothing stands out really

Spent a few days at Bey Ness farm above Robin Hoods Bay, always a treat. It's bloody windy but the view is incredible

Arrived at Nicolaston campsite in Wales, facilities are top notch, pitches are nice and level. (VW T Field)
Explored the local beach, bit of a trek back, I think my lungs fell out of my arse at some point, I'll look for them tomorrow.

1st impressions? Very impressed.

Putting the awning up in a 25mph wind was somewhat interesting. No sooner had we had it set up, the wind died.
