T6 180 using oil and compression down on 1 cylinder :-(

Hi All,

Bought a T6 new in 2016. Absolutely love it. 130k miles and has never missed a beat, never let me down.

It has never used oil until recently. Oil light came on, oil was low so topped it up and kept an eye on it and it is using oil. Had a garage compression check it and they have confirmed it is 40 psi down on one cylinder.

It still runs perfectly, and you would never know there was an issue. But it needs sorting, can anybody recommend a specialist to remove, repair and replace the engine, or am I better off finding a low milage unit from a salvage vehicle.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

Have you got the cylinder pressure test results?

That would be good for reference.

Not sure on the spec ATM but 40psi down seems a lot.

Assuming we don't know where the pressure is leaking too?.... That would tell you if it's bore wear or something else.

It might not necessarily be boar ware, it could be carbon build up on valves etc.

Thanks for the reply.

I will get the pressure test results tomorrow and post.

I'm no mechanic, but if the van was left to idle for a long period of time, after a short drive it would have excessive burnt oil smoke from the exhaust.

Subsequently, the garage decided it would be bore/piston rings or valve stem oil seals. they compression checked it dry, and then put some oil in the bore, thus confirming it was bore and not valve stem seals.

Unfortunately this appears to be yet another CFCA biting the dust. It's going to be a cylinder head off job to inspect everything, and just hope this one is a cracked head or sticking valves etc, but I think everyone knows where this is heading......
It's not just the actual compression pressures that are important, but differential pressures - 40psi difference seems excessive, even if it's still in spec, as all cylinders should be showing even wear and similar pressures. Couple this with burning oil, is a smoking gun for 'EGR disintegration' bore wear, and as normal, absolutely no symptoms apart from sudden excessive oil consumption.
The chances of finding a good low mileage CFCA is very low, the chances of being fobbed off with a totally knackered one is very high so avoid salvage units like the plague, unless you know the very detailed history of it.

Get a Millers Oils test done on your oil asap. If it comes back with high aluminium content then your engine and turbos are likely stuffed.

Search CFCA on here as there’s a couple of ongoing threads with more info on this.

Resto Resus seem to be replacing a number of engines for some time now and not just CFCA’s. So give them a call. They have a source for new engines. Sit down when getting the quote.

Thanks for the help and info.

You have just confirmed what I already believed. I will give Resto Resus a call.

Thanks again. :)

So I can have a new engine fitted, and the gearbox reworked whilst engine is out for approximately £8k.

Does anybody think putting that much money into a 2016 kombi is worth it?? Anybody know what I could sell the van for with the faulty engine? Not sure what to do and and any help is greatly appreciated

Surely the van would be worth the normal market value minus the repair cost AND the reduction for inconvenience.
So IMO you’d loose the sum for inconvenience if you sold as it is.

Personally I think it's worth spending the £8K if the rest of the vehicle is in good condition.
You end up with a T6 with effectively a new engine, you don't have the gamble of buying a replacement van and you can take steps to ensure that the new engine doesn't suffer the same problem.

You didn’t mention if the 8K includes an engine exchange or if your defective engine will be replaced.
The defective engine will still have substantial value for either a rebuild or stripping for parts.

I think you may be bid low based on the market right now, probably £10k or more below vehicle value for someone to take the risk of buying a non running van to fix. Unless the buyer has access to an engine and sees it as an easy and relatively cheap fix. And even then they will want some margin in the deal. There’s always someone with money for the right deal. May not be the best deal for you.

So depending if the van is super desireable as a keeper for yourself with a new engine it’s a tough choice either way.

If I were in the same predicament with my current van I’d be swallowing the bitter pill of a replacement engine due to the spec of my van. If it were not so desireable to me longer term, I’d be offloading it trying to minimise the cost to me.

Some might suggest you offload it on to one of those shitbag main dealers, a bit of payback!

Thanks for the input. The van certainly isn't a minter, it's almost borderline a little neglected. But it is the only vehicle I have ever owned that still makes me smile every time I drive it. We have decided to spend the money, as it's better the devil you know.
I'd better put in some overtime :)
