Sudden violent jerking

2016 VW T6 SWB Campervan Gearbox trouble.
Please excuse the long post.
The van had done about 124000 when this trouble occurred.
For the preceding couple of thousand kilometers the gearbox seemed to gradually be getting a bit undecided about gear changes. Then drove off from morning start on a cold engine. About 15 seconds later going uphill (not steep), probably in 2nd or 3rd gear and about 15-25kph, it suddenly started jerking violently about eight or 10 times in about four seconds while slowing to a stop. It would go-stop go-stop... rapidly and violently until it slowed right down in spite of gently accelerating when it suddenly began. When stopped the engine was still running and no warning lights on the dash. In Park or Neutral the engine would rev normally. Slowly drove away again and it kept going with a few more little jerks. Turned around and got back home slowly.(something very similar happened once before at about 98,000k. That time I got it to rev up and had no more trouble until now)

Had it taken on a tow truck to our local mechanics. They had it for a few days and were unable to find any problem. The gearbox oil was spot on and all the diagnostics were ok. They drove it several times with no problems. We had no more problems either for the next 1500kms.
Then it happened again. Violent jerking occurred again twice. Both times going downhill about 50 or 60kph when I gently started to brake. So violent that coffee jumped out of the hole in the lid of a coffee cup when it was only about 1/3 full.. (it was a smooth sealed road) There were about six big bangs and jerks in about 2 seconds. Feels like it suddenly jams into a much too low gear briefly and got kicked back out about 6 times. I wonder it didn't break the axles! Again no warning lights came on. The next 100k was ok, then it happened a second time. Drove the rest of the way home ok including a lot of 100kph on the highway with no more trouble. It has only ever happened at slower speeds when in probably 2nd to 5th gear.

It has happened:
About seven or eight times all together, four really bad and some very obvious but relatively brief.
Only at speeds from 10 - 60kph
Never while under cruise control
Always when it is, or likely to be, changing gears
Uphill and downhill
Accelerating and decelerating (including when first applying brakes)
With a cold and hot engine

Has anyone heard of something similar?
Any suggestions please?

Here's an update to my original post.
The van went to a VW specialist who decided, as a first step, to do a full gearbox service for about AU$550. Apart from replacing the oil, I understand that some settings were reset back to the original settings. He doubted that it would fix the problem.
Since then however we have done another 6,000km with a few really minor glitches from the gear changes, nothing like the original violent jerking. Mostly gear changes are now as smooth as they used to be.
Fingers crossed that it will stay that way as the next step if it is needed will be a lot more expensive

While not a VW box this may give you some hope:
