Stance+ Proline Problems

Hi there,

Just got my Stance + prolines fitted (by a suspension shop) here in Aus and am having some dramas.

My van is a 2019 LWB T6 (T30) and is currently empty in the rear with only a 3 seater that very rarely gets sat in.

The front seems to be bound up (coil looks tight) by the looks in the photos giving it a real stiff/harsh/riding on bump stops feeling

The back is making weird spring noises that I'm not sure what it could be.

It's going back to the mechanics but thought I'd check here too see if someone has dealt with this before as I'm also not too confident now on the suspension company fixing the issues.

When I spoke to them today they mentioned that the front was up as high as it would go? (I would like it higher as it's a bit low for me now)

Thanks!

Hi Mate, The fronts are wound up too much so probably locking out, I'd wind them down to mid position as a starting point. Cant quite see on the photo, but there should be a rubber mount at the base of the spring.

You need to release some of that pressure on those front springs, that looks highly dangerous to drive in that compressed state. Have you spoken to or sent those images to Stance.
When I contacted them they were very helpful.

This van has Stance+ Street that are wound down to almost the lowest and it looks about the same ride height as yours on the highest? (Empty van) You may have bought the wrong set of Stance if yours are too low.

It’s at the mechanics today so I’ll give them the chance to fix first but if no luck I’ll tackle it myself.
I’ve double checked the numbers I can see on the coils and I think they’re right going off the part number of the kit on the stance website.

Do you have any noise from your rear set up?
Anything like the video I posted?

I'm not a Stance dealer and have never fitted stance, but it looks to me as though on these kits both the length of the shock and the effective length of the spring can be adjusted. I'm assuming that is so you can shorten the shocks to achieve the really big drops that they advertise. It's hard to say at the front, but looking at the pictures of the rear setup it looks as though the rear shocks are set to their shortest length, but the spring height adjuster is set to it's effective highest setting. That just logically doesn't seem right to me. That may be causing an unnecessary amount of pre-tension in the rear spring and may also account for the rear end sitting slightly lower than the front, even though the rear spring is set to its highest ride height setting. Perhaps those rear shocks need to be adjusted to be a bit longer to better suit the current spring height setting.

The front end definitely needs dropping though, I would be lowering the adjustable front spring seat to relieve some of that tension. They've basically taken all of the movement out of the front spring, it's no wonder it feels so harsh, it can hardly move to do it's job!

Set up correctly, whatever suspension you are running, you should be looking for a slightly nose down setup to maintain the correct steering feel and handling characteristics of the van.

Ian @Eclipse Campers is a Stance dealer and has already offered some advice, but Ian, is the proline kit one you have fitted many of? Am I talking shite about those rear shocks, or is there some sense in what I'm saying?

Yep the prolines have adjustable body front and rear so you can adjust ride height while still providing comfort in the ride. I was going to add photos but the file size is too large. The rears dont look too bad and probably has another 20mm drop left of needed on damper body. Id say the spring noise was the the spring not seated properly in rubber swing arm bush but hard to say without looking at it.

So got the van back and the rear noise is gone. The front now how ever bangs on sharp bumps (even at slow speeds). They’ve put on the paper work they’ve put 15mm of preload on the spring. Is this correct? The spring still looks very bunched up!

Jacked up and reset the preload myself on both fronts and the knock is gone! It’s now a little bouncey but I’m putting that down to the front being higher than the rear now. Will adjust the front down (so it’s lower then the back) tomorrow and report back
First two photos are what I ended up with after adjusting and the others are the damage already done by the poor preloading done by the garage.

That looks a whole lot better! I'm glad you've got this sorted and that you're getting closer to what you expected from the kit. Isn't it a shame though, that you've had to end up sorting it out yourself!! It really frustrates me when people trust a place to look after them and set things up correctly and just get lied to! Maybe they didn't know better, maybe they thought what they were saying was correct, but you have proven yourself that it wasn't!

It’s very frustrating. I really should have done the job myself from the start. You just think you’re doing the right thing by using a professional. These guys have the biggest name for suspension where I am from and this is insanely disappointing. Will be going back in during the week to have a chat with them.
Again thank you to all that have helped me!

They can’t be any kind of specialist when even an amateur can see the springs were coil bound.

I dread to think how many other cars they’ve bodged like that.

I would be tempted to talk to some form of local trading standards about the state they left you in.

So my heights at current are

Fronts - 390 (centre of wheel to arch)
Rears - 400 (centre of wheel to arch)

Front Sill - 200
Back Sill - 250

I backed my preload off and set it by hand and locked it up but I was getting the bouncing front/nodding dog thing happening. I followed stances instructions and started with 10mm, than 15mm than 20mm. (They suggest 15-20mm)

Adding the 10mm helped with the nodding dog effect a little but it was still there. Everytime after adding preload from 10mm nothing changed.

does my front need to come down more to reduce the effect or am I just expecting too much from coil overs.

Hopefully somebody more knowledgeable will be on shortly but I thought stance were meant to run quite low.

Based on your measurements I don't think you're that low. Maybe you need to go lower still to let the spring do the work properly. Did stance give you a recommended ride height?

Also once you've had it sorted are you getting the wheel alignment done?

Might try run it a bit lower and see how it goes.

No recommended ride height from Stance. Just this.
Front Lowering40-150mm
Rear Lowering40-120mm

And yep i'll get a wheel alignment (again) after I finally get it sorted
