Sensible suspension options? Or sensible wheels?

Hi

I need suspension advise! It seems to be a merry-go-round of conflicting information, the more I read the worse it gets.

I've read virtually every suspension post there is on here and on various FB groups! Which to be honest has made it worse, massive information overload!

I've got a T6 kombi T32, used basically as a car and for carrying MTBs and trips to Europe. I'm currently dropped 40mmm on Cobra springs and running staggered 20s with 265/40 fronts and 275/40 rears. The problem is the crashy ride!

I need a sensible option, I can't go spending over a grand on it, so that rules out a lot of options. I'm happy with the look but could go a little lower on the front. Just want a solution to the ride and not bothered about going mega low. I see people saying Stance is great and others saying it's trash. Similar with all the makes really!

I'm I best just to replace the fronts with a Bilstein B8 or similar?

I'm interested to hear from people who have run different setups and what they think.

The other option is just swapping the 20s for some 17s with 235/65 ATs and going back to stock suspension? Will this be better than spending on the suspension?? Thing is i'm happy with the look of the 20s but would go to swamper if that is the easiest way to achieve a better ride

Thanks

James

If stock suspension was any good people wouldn’t swap it out, bite the bullet and get some decent suspension as recommended by the trade experts on here

I have the same van and use for the the exact same things, carrying bikes, trips through Europe etc

Also on 20" wheels but with STX coilovers, probably 70mm down and it drives like a dream, it's lovely

+1 for STX as a solution. A sensible drop range & extremely good value for money.

Going around in circles trying different branded springs will likely cost you more in the long run. They’re the cheapest option for a reason, & I doubt any will tick all of the boxes you’re hoping to cover.

I’d get in direct contact with one of the specialists on here & go through your requirements in order to guarantee nailing it on the next attempt.

I think its your wheels/tyres and lack of sidewall.

Is there anyone local you could borrow a set of wheels from or go for a ride in their van?

Suspension is a very personal choice - I had a ride in a van on coil overs and 19s with ultra low profile tyres. I hated it - very crashy/harsh.

I run H&R -40 springs, Koni special active dampers (curtesy of @CRS Performance ) 18” amarok steels with 235/50 tyres. It handles nicely and is comfortable. I used to run 17” winter tyres 235/55 and they were softer over bumps - a bit more give in the sidewalls.

Top tip, for honest reviews, ask people who have replaced the suspension that you're looking at!!..

Also, don't overlook the benefit of uprated anti-roll bars. OEM suspension is cheap and this is reflected in both comfort and control.

B14 s + f/r anti roll bars + 20 x 9/8.5 with ET44/35. Nankang AS-1s, Perfect set up. Ride is fine, just like a BMW M5 IMO. If you can’t do it all, start with the B14s.
